Offensive Breakdown: Utah State

Agreed. Auburn uses a very similar set also, but to create that numbers advantage play side we have to put both wrs on the right on the line so that we can motion Pig.

It also has to put pressure on the defense to recognize who is eligible and who is not. On the down side UT got penalized once for it because Pearson lined up covered in this formation (or similar) and went out on a pattern.

I think to up pressure on the defense we need to replace that left tackle with a tight end so that he is eligible. The real pressure currently is just forcing them to shift and adjust properly to us moving all 4 skills to one side.

I don't imagine it was that formation, because I doubt our staff would try to throw out of it. I think it was just a mix up because we have so many young guys and a few formations were they are both on, or the slots on, or the flanker is on. So I think it was confusion not design.

Agree with the first paragraph.

As far as Pearson being down field. The formation looked the same as far as the three wide outs (twins right, one wide left). I think Pearson just didn't do a good enough job backing off the LOS so he got flagged for being ineligible. I don't think it was by design either just was pointing out that it also puts pressure on the slot guy to know whether he is on or off.

Thanks - really interesting posts. It would be really interesting to see video of the actual plays showing how the diagrams translate to the field. Of course I realize this would be a tremendous amount of work, so I'm not expecting anyone to do this. It would just be really interesting.

That's coming. Be patient.

Great thread V8. Your time is much appreciated, especially considering you are typing with a broken arm.

Thanks. And I started physical therapy last week. They gave me some putty to start molding in that hand. I do it 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes each time. I've seen a lot of improvement, and when I made this thread, it was actually the first time I had been able to type with both hands. So it was kind of exciting. I'm actually heading back to work for the first time today.

I haven't watched the game again, but half of your sets have a WR covered up. Not sure why we would even have a formation like that in this offense. In a heavy set, yes.

If it's to confuse the defense, then that is beyond stupid. Kids are taught who's eligible and who's not in middle school.

We rarely ran this set, and when we did it was so we could run jet sweep with the wr from the other side.

It's a good set for jet sweep because you overload the defense to one side. And if you believe it's beyond stupid that we occasionally use this, I don't wanna know how you feel about gus malzahn. Because this was one of Auburns main sets.

Gotcha. Stupid was harsh. My main question is why not have Z or X off instead of both on.

You have to have 7 on the line. When we motion Pig for Jet he is no longer one of those seven, so both of the twins have to be on.

I'm stickying this so it doesn't get lost. We have video clips of 12 plays to breakdown in this thread.

Cool! I really like this thread and hope to see one every week! It might hurt a little bit when we face some of our tougher competition but like our fearless leader often says, "They are all teaching moments." hehe

I'm going to post 12 individual videos that Vol8188 wanted to specifically comment on.

Here goes.
