There has always been a problem with there not being all that much talent historically in Arizona High Schools. To be successful a coach at Arizona or Arizona State has to recruit in California,Texas or lean heavily on JC players.Herm actually lasted a lot longer there than I thought he would.
Arizona and Arizona St should both be better football programs historically than they are.
I think the last 20 years or so though that has changed/is changing. Phoenix is a dynamic, growing metro area. There has always been a problem with there not being all that much talent historically in Arizona High Schools. A&M, OU and Texas walk into the State of Arizona and take any recruit they want. Hell, even Baylor just snagged an under the radar TE and 5* basketball recruit from the Phoenix area. The Phoenix area is 100% an NFL market. ASU needs to figure out what they are going to do.As 05 already pointed out, Phoenix is not a backwater any longer. Between Phoenix itself growing, Intel setting up shop in Chandler, and a large number of things in Glendale that area is booming
Every school worth their salt has a scout pretty much dedicated to the Phoenix high schools
You're starting to see quite a few QBs coming out of that area vs SoCal also. Slovis at Pitt and I believe Spenser Rattler are two current examples.
Now that I go and look at the recruits that come out of the State of Arizona the last 5 years, it actually is pretty top heavy as some described. There are guys like Rattler and Slovis as you mentioned, but in any given recruiting year there are just a handful of other 4-star guys and then it really drops off. You'd think a metro like Phoenix would produce a bigger volume of talent, especially given the population trend over the last 15-20 years. As 05 already pointed out, Phoenix is not a backwater any longer.
