a serious candidate list

Howland has no interest in doing television while out of coaching, and as he told Jeff Goodman of ESPN, he does't care which portion of the country he coaches and lives in. "I want to go somewhere I can win," he told Goodman. "My quality of life is about winning."

He would be a HUGE get. Someone will hire him and I bet he does very well wherever he goes.
So he is interested in coaching again?

You realize your talking about one of the more efficient offenses in the country don't you!? hehe hahaha

I think most that had to endure that mess of a thread understand my point now. Some stats mean jack shiznit and you have to see what's happening to analyze what's going on, not a sheet of paper.

I can't believe the terrible spacing. Reminds me of a 5 yr old kid's soccer game. Never seen a team throw is to a guy on the block from the wing and bring another wing player right over and bring a defensive player with him to cut off a lane.
Absolutely never have seen a team that can't create driving lanes for 6'7 slashers. Driving me crazy.

Don't forget what he did at FIU in year 1. Impressive.

assistant at Northeastern University for 1 Year
assistant at Duquesne University for 1 year
L'Ville for 2 Years
Flrodia for 2 Years
L'Ville again for 1 year
FIU for 1 Year
Minnesota - in year 1.

Let's see how long he stays at Minnesota.

1. Sean Miller
2. Fred Hoiberg

Since 1 & 2 are pipe dreams, we'll move on.

3. Shaka Smart
4. Lawrence Frank
5. Gregg Marshall

3, 4, & 5 are pretty interchangeable to me.

6. Buzz Williams
7. Dana Altman
8. Ben Howland
9. Chris Mack
10. Rick Pitino Jr.

Doubt he'd jump to 3 different schools in 3 years

you are probably right, but UT far better opportunity and if he sees it a place he could spend 10 years, he may do it. Not saying he should be a target, but I would be interested. We likely need someone far more seasoned. I don't care how many jobs Shaka Smart has rejected, make a big offer and make him say no, imo.

So he is interested in coaching again?

According to that. He doesn't want to do anything but coach and doesn't care where. Tennessee has the facilities and fanbase to be a winning program. We just need a solid coach.

Great list. Didn't Shaka Smart give us a laugh when we talked to him last time? If so, then there must be another reason why I do not like him anymore lol.

Dana Altman is someone else I didn't think about. That would be a great hire. If we went for cheap (up and coming guy) than Ben Jacobson gets my vote. He signed a 10 year extension with Northern Iowa and I think turned down the Minnesota job if I'm not mistaken.

I don't know the truth about Shaka and the last search. I have heard others say that he wanted to talk but UT didn't reach out. I am not sure what happened.

Bruce Pearl is the answer. The show cause will be up early next year I believe. Its an obvious move. The penalty for what he did was absurd. Its time to bring him back.

Jacobson is another guy that has proven he could win. For those that care, he has the most "Pearl" feel of names I've seen mentioned. Proven himself as a winner at a lower level, winning his conference twice in seven seasons (finished 3rd twice as well). Location could be a factor for him. He is from North Dakota, played at NDSt., got his coaching start there as an assistant, and now is at Northern Iowa, and has been for eight years now.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up with him if the 10 I listed said no, and in full disclosure, our best chance at hiring someone from my list lies in the bottom five, so we aren't far off from being at Jacobson's name.

His contract is 450,000 with 25,000 raises during his contract. He had 8 straight 18 win seasons when they only had 6 18 win seasons all time. He's only 43 too. I'd love to have him.

Maybe we can make him and Wes Washpun a package deal. :)

Nah Jacobson is a good one. I'd take him.

Way too early for a candidates list.

And if it weren't too early, any of the 5 mentioned would be a lateral move at best IMO. Unfortunately, there is nothing to suggest UT would shell out for a more proven prospect, so don't get your hopes up.

There are plenty of reasons that Byrd makes sense, but plenty of reasons he doesn't as well. He barely got a sniff three years ago, and hasn't gotten any younger. Recruiting for him could be a challenge, and we already have people clammoring about our recruiting classes, and where they are ranked. Byrd probably wouldn't sniff a top-150 player (and could probably still win without them), but the fans don't like winning in unconventional fashion. To most, it has to be flashy and sexy, loaded with 4* & 5* talent. The Butler model of winning (or Belmont), won't be well-received IMO, even if it is winning. Our fickle fans will demand more.

I would rather watch them win games with 3star players than loose games with 4 and 5 star athletes. If you consider anything about the current coaching staffs style of play flashy or sexy you need your head examined.
