While I agree with part of your assessment, Saban wasn't also a first time head coach facing the early signing date, either. All of these things are factors. My suggestion is to hold off on judgement of his recruiting prowess until he has a full shot. Jimbo is a well-known, national championship coach, and Taggart (for some reason) is a well thought of head coach as well. This year recruits will be able to see what our staff is trying to sell and that will make things easier. I'm not saying we can't dig out because we've sucked, I was pointing out that its a major factor-we are simply off the radar of a lot of these guys. I never said "we've sucked and that was the only reason."
And kids don't have to go back and study our last 6-10 years. We haven't been much of a factor and thus, they probably think we're a second rate program.
Some did.. Not sure they'll admit it now..
Those who will admit it are pretty angry and touchy when you remind them.
I like Pruitt. I liked Jones as far as that goes. But being UT's HC is about meeting a standard of performance. Part of the reason UT has declined is that coaches were allowed to fall well short... and survive anyway.
Of course there is also the issue of who was hired to begin with... Hopefully Fulmer got it right.
Even if we managed to pull a Top 5 class and Butch was still our HC, would anyone really be excited right now considering his inability to develop talent?
This signing day should not be an indication on how well of a recruiter Pruitt is.
Hes not been on the job long.
Weve had some great NSDs in the last 5 years. Coaching them higher than the high school level has been the problem.
