‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

that actually makes the most sense. hate to see a spot go a way on next year's class, when you know they're going to go after a big time QB in that class, and knowing the potential the 19 cycle has.

i don't like the depth, and it is an issue this season. just not sure that spot is worth giving up potentially 3 years of another great player we could have signed in the next cycle.

If it helps us win ball games, it’s totally worth it

well, you gotta do both. you gotta take care of this year, and plan for the future.

and if you think you can be set at qb with Shrout, Mcbride and JG, and a preferred walk on, then it doesn't make sense to go get a grad transfer, that will either take a spot in this year's class or take away a spot in next year's class (effectively removing a player that could be on the roster the next 3 years).

the new rules i think have basically eliminated back counting.

so you do have to be careful when/where/how you use any of the 25 spots available to you year in, year out.

and i'm not saying it's wrong to take the transfer. just it may not be worth it, if he's just gonna wind up being a back up all season...a "just in case".

our qb situation right now is a depth and competitiveness issue. how dire either is perceived is what will drive the decision.....and it at least seems it's dire enough to warrant consideration.....

Guys I think we should roll with what we have. JG showed his arm talent IMO. Where he lacks was his pocket presence, but you get better with that as you play more. Also with better coaching he will develop into a good QB. We saw what one year of better coaching did with Jonathan Crompton, so I’m good with JG. After watching him he seems more of a pro style QB than a dual threat anyways, so let’s see if he can have a good spring and own this starting job.

He'd just be here for a year. If JG can't handle the heat, let him explore his options. WM should welcome the opportunity to learn from an experienced college QB.

They will decide if it’s needed after spring practice and a full evaluation of the QB’s in the roster.

Yeah weird can’t find profiles on him either or Junior highlights, maybe he was injured too?

Hudl has Junior highlights, but it's only two minutes long. Not normal for a high rated prospect. I assume he may be better with camps, but he has some work to do. Need to tighten up his throw and footwork. On the Junior high lights only 3 throws I thought were really impressive and they were leading throws. All the other throws were passes wide open.

Fill me in:
just when would a transfer (Chryst specifically)come in, or be able to come in?

Spring --Summer--Fall--
(I know after they graduate, but)

He is probably in classes right now since he just announced he is transferring. Just like Dormady. Classes have already started. Heck I've already had an exam in one of my Masters classes. This gives Pruitt time to push his QBs, and see if we need depth and or more talent. If we have a QB get hurt in Spring, bet the house we take another QB.

Jesus Christ Ertel. Why in God’s name? McBride can’t play in this conference. Give me JG, Shrout, a grad transfer if we must, and the walkons. McBride may as well look for a MAC or Southern Conference team imo.

I will not say McBride will ever be a starter here or another Power 5 school but I think you're a little quick on the judgment after one game, freshman season on literally the worst TN team to take the field in history.

truthfully every QB we threw out there was garbage and McBride showed the most. Our OL is embarrassing too.

McBride is a special talent. He has a strong arm, some speed, and made some good decisions. Problem was he had a vanilla playbook, not enough reps to hit timing routs consistently. He made the quick reads and everything, just would lead a little too much. I know QBs when I see them. He can play. His height is his biggest problem. Needs to learn to work between the tackles and rollout on some passes.

Our QBs weren't garbage. They had new young WRs, the QBs were young and not coached properly, our OL was a Frankenstein of walkons and injured Butch Jones quality recruits. With Pruitt I absolutely see our QBs turning it around. When they have more than 2-3 seconds to throw per play they can actually read properly.

QBs need to get rid of the ball by 3 seconds, but if they only have three seconds every play, they rush through their progression and don't find the right guy and make the right throw. Give him 5 seconds and he can get it off in 3-4 seconds to the open man.

fix the O line, have a running game that can be counted on, in the traditional sense, and our QB's could improve.... a lot. there's more to the qb story at TN than just the QB the last few years.

O line, WR running better routes, getting some separation, and a run game that can help take some pressure off the QB, especially on early downs. we put a lot of pressure on qbs to make plays on 3rd and long. a lot. and while we were setting records a couple years ago rushing the ball, it just wasn't the type of run game that benefited the QB. heck, a lot of those rushing yards were BY the qb.

the scheme change will help. but just like they've tried to do this cycle....depth on the o line, depth at RB, bigger, faster WR's that will go get the ball..........

all will help whoever plays the position.

we're going to have to wipe our memory clean of what the QB position at TN has looked like the last 5 years. i don't think it's going to look like that anymore.

and none of this means we're going to have outstanding qb play this year. just that it's not all on that one guy. the whole offense needs to get better.

It has everything to do with JG. Our QB did not lead us to a TD in the whole month of October and all the orange shaded idgets on here think he’s going to get it done

So his first three games as a starter facing a 9 win SEC team, the Nation Champions, and another SEC bowl team?

First start vs a 9 win SEC team

11/18 4 red zone drives, dropped pass in endzone that would have won the game.

That was a good performance with bad coaching that cost us points.

Second start

9/16 VS NATIONAL CHAMPION Bama. Best a freshman qb in his second start with the talent disparity could hope for.

3rd start

18/23 78.3% 242 yds vs SEC bowl team UK in his third start. Lead us to 26 points and the offense scored several tds.

Looks pretty good to me.

They need a backup. Every grad transfer we are looking at has similar or worse stats as a soph/jr/sr than JG had as a freshman in the SEC, who faced only SEC or bowl teams.

This, and didn't he also look pretty good in that monsoon against LSU with 4 walkon OL? :loco:

So to those who are trying to knock JG, can you please list the names of the play makers he had around him? Well besides Kelly of course.

Everyone drooling over Callaway. Johnson was reliable when JG could get it in his area. Wolf was one of the best TEs we've had at UT. Needed to be used more. So yes he did has option. Just never got it to them much. You know instead he chose taking a sack/ running out of bounds 10+ Yards behind the LOS

Fact is JG got no QB coaching and his surrounding cast was awful. He has all the tools to be drafted in 3yrs. Mental side is TBD.
