‘18 QB Grad Transfer Keller Chryst (UT commit 3/1/18)

Just spoke to my former head of NCAA compliance. These grad transfers would count toward both the 25 and 85 unless it's a grey or blue shirt situation.

That makes no sense. Blueshirts and greyshirts count towards the NEXT seasons 25. And why would a TRANSFER count towards a signing class?

Exactly, Wiggins was a waste and we are paying for it now. I dont like using a spot on a one year guy.

managing that going forward is going to be tricky.

it's buy now, pay later personified. aside from a situational deal like at QB, it's going to be hard to justify accepting a grad transfer now, knowing that by the time you get the class on campus he will count in, he won't be there. it's just a blank filled by a guy that played last year.

Id rather replace the roof than patch it.

I agree with Butchna that it doesn't make sense that transfers, especially grad transfers, count towards a signing class. Having said that, the fact that most say we only have 22 spots because of Wiggins and now offering another grad transfer a blue shirt indicates that transfers count against the 25 limit. Assuming this is true, I hate the idea of taking a grad transfer because scholarships are limited.

Having said that, we will only have 12 seniors next year (Henderson, Jennings, Hall?, Phillips, Kongbo, Picou, Johnson, Tuttle, Kelly Jr., Bates, Kirkland, Abernathy). So the 85 limit may be more constraining on the 2019 class any way. That may be why they are willing to bring in a grad transfer.

I think the fact that all these grad transfers are being talked about as blue shirts shows where they are on the staffs priorities. It seems like they would like another experienced qb to come in and compete with JG but they would be okay if they didn't get one. Otherwise they would be trying harder to recruit them IMO.

Yea they want an experienced backup. If not McBride/Shrout backup next year until we get a 4/5 star heir apparent at qb.

Chryst is much better than Mcbride, Shrout, Thompson though. I would take him for sure.

Most things in the NCAA don't make sense... but I'm here to tell you that is indeed the case.

It was how you worded it. I’ve heard the initial counter stuff, but blueshirting and greyshirting has always been about HIGH SCHOOL recruits. Never even heard about one being used for a JUCO. Maybe your “NCAA compliance” guy has been fired recently for substance abuse.

Blueshirting is a term used for high school kids that aren't recruited and can count forward.

A transfer doesn't fit that but can have the same result of counting forward even though they aren't "blue shirts"

That's my understanding

He did some good things but the worry is he really doesn't have the feel for the Position needed to win. I want this kid as depth in case he can't be taught those things but we need JG to win the Job and develop for the future.

I can understand and agree with both points. And if they can bring in a legit, seasoned QB to compete for the job and/or serve as quality depth, it’s be a good thing, we should all be for that.

As far as JG and his lack of “feel” for the position....maybe I’m in the minority here, but I think he can be coached up in that regard. I think he can be coached to make his first 2 reads and either get rid of the ball or take off if he has a lane to get what he can with his feet. What you can’t coach is what JG has, which is a strong, accurate arm.

I think the kid is supremely confident in his ability to throw from the pocket and that he was trying to make plays on most all those plays where he held the ball too long and took bad sacks. The kid can throw it, and he can throw it accurately and I firmly believe that he can be coached out of the bad habit of taking bad sacks. Jmo.

No, he's still running NCAA compliance at a D1 program, but definitely not a Tennessee level program. He was referring to blue and grey shirts as ways around the 25 in general but stated explicitly grad transfers will count toward the 25 unless there is a grey or blue shirt type of situation.

And what would those “situations” be? How do high school recruiting loopholes apply to graduate transfers?

Kirkland & Hall both likely to get medical redshirts from this past season (assuming Hall is even playing still), so we really may only be looking at 10 scholarship seniors for the 2018 season.

Chryst also had a MASSIVE advantage in having heisman contender Bryce Love in the backfield and a great offensive line. Bryce Love rushed for more yards than (Kelly and Chandler combined x 2)! Think about what options would have been open to our QB's if we had a run game like that. Anyone you put in there with that O-Line and run game should have a 60%+ completion percentage. Imagine the options off of play action with faking a hand off to Bryce Love.

This is where taking a Grad transfer would get hairy. Chryst more than likely is transferring because he wants to play but if he stays as marginal as he has been he won't get that at UT.

Been there posted that argument. No one wants facts.

You can blue shirt any transfers. SMU blue shirted Dimarya Mixon when he transferred from here. He is counted against the 2018 class.

LOL. No he's not. The few times I saw him he looked like a deer in the headlights. He's another JG. Guy who holds onto the ball and doesn't have the best instincts.

I would just roll with Will McBride as our QB next year.

Oh no, do I sense another moniker change?

You can blue shirt grad transfers... so that would be one. Was mentioned previously as well.

Yeah...with Thomsen BY Thomsen. Didn’t buy it. Chalked it up to him misunderstanding the Vol coach. Have never heard of a blueshirt/greyshirt being used on anyone other than a high school recruit.
