There's more involved that just the scholarships. The athletes get the use of many things that a "regular" student on scholarship does not get such as the food, the training facilities, medical help and other things.
I'm not a multimillionaire so I have no clue about what they do or how they think. From what I've seen most of them are more interested in making more millions than they are anything else. JMO

So walk ons aren't allowed to use the training facilities or medical services? They don't get tutors? I think you may be mistaken.

I know for a fact walkons use the training facilities. I've seen pics of walk ons working out with the team. I also knew some walk ons who got tutoring help when I was there, so I know that's wrong. I'm assuming the medical part is wrong because I know for sure he was wrong about the other two.

Preferred walk ons are scholarship athletes without scholarships. Same privileges. Regular walk ons, not so much.

Preferred walk ons don't have to "try out" for the team they are guaranteed a spot whereas other walk ons have to "make" the team. They both still pay their own way and neither are on an athletic scholarship.

Preferred walk ons at some schools may be able to use the training facilities. They may have also received a "promise" of a scholarship at a later date.
