‘23 NC SG Freddie Dilione (Tennessee commit)

The possibility exists that Dilione enrolled with no desire to be thrown to the wolves. People assume it's Barnes's decision to not play him, but perhaps a stipulation to him enrolling was that Tennessee wouldn't pressure him to play immediately.

I doubt he plays this season, but I also doubt that he doesn’t want to play this season. I’m sure Barnes and him have agreed that him RSing is what’s best at this point, but Dilione being the one insisting on not playing is something I’d doubt

I hope he ditches Barnes for wasting his time.

Give it a rest man, good grief. There is absolutely no evidence to support the idea that Barnes is wasting his time. You’re being unreasonable. There is literally not a single downside to bringing him to campus early. Not one.

I'm not claiming to believe it's the reason. Just presenting an alternate theory. Kyle Alexander had no plans on playing as a freshman. His preference was to redshirt.

I know, I was saying in my opinion that theory is highly unlikely

I personally believe that not playing was the most reasonable path forward, and that both parties agreed in the direction of this path. I also feel like another pathway was discussed, and if Dilione was needed, the initial plan could be diverted. They very well might stick to their plans, but the option to switch gears remains reasonable.

To add: massive, massive difference between Kyle Alexander who came in having only played a few years of basketball and clearly needed significant strength/weight gain to battle against SEC bigs vs Dilione who is one of the top guards in the class and already has a much more polished game

If I'm coming in early, I'm gonna play. If coach brings me in early and doesn't play me, peace I'm out. I hope he does that to Barnes for wasting his time bringing him in early.

The team should stop practicing then, and cease all activities that occur outside of game time, seeing as all of that is a waste of time

You're taking my point far too literal. The Alexander comparison was only to provide an example of someone who entered school with that approach. Not trying to make a direct apples to apples correlation.

You hate Barnes so much that you would actively cheer for player discontent and team turmoil.

I know it violates board policy as a personal attack (I think Freak will allow some latitude here), and I don't say this flippantly or lightly, but you really are stupid if you feel that way.

Our offense lacks what Freddie brings. If he can give some energy and get to the rim a couple times defense be dammed it's worth it to play him. So, yes I would if Barnes is going to he that stubborn.

Again, though, why is the assumption that Barnes is holding him back? Do you really think Freddie agreed to enroll early under one set of parameters and Barnes just yanked the rug from underneath him? That is so self-destructive and counterproductive.

Why not just trust that they arrived at the decision together with a level of understanding of what the plan is?

I know it's your default move to just assume the worst of our coach, but just a thought... maybe exercise just an ounce of trust in the guy who's been doing this longer than many of these posters have been alive?

What does he stand to gain by brining a kid in early, lie to him, piss him off by not playing him, and then watch him leave in four months?

I'm not saying he lied to him, or there isn't some sort of plan. I'm just saying don't do it unless you plan on playing him this year. I'm not telling a kid to come in early unless I plan on playing him.

He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt because I don't respect. Barnes isn't anything special

Why not? The 13th scholarship wasn’t being used and the kid doesn’t have to come in early unless he wants to.

Now you make it sound like Barnes forced him to enroll early. What, were we going to yank his offer if he didn't enroll in January???

It has already been said that both Tennessee and Dilione (and family) agreed this was the best decision for Freddie. Apparently, the best decision was to come in and get started academically, get familiar with the system, and to get familiar with his teammates in practice and workouts. No one ever promised playing time, and bet you dollars to donuts that if Dilione had demanded playing time as a condition of enrolling early, Barnes would have told him nothing is guaranteed and that he may be better off just waiting until June.

There. Is. ZERO. Downside. To. Him. Coming. Early. What don't you understand about this???

I feel confident you will never be faced with making any coaching decisions which is most definitely a blessing for the Vol faithful.

You don't know what kind of drama this could create. Let's say he's not good at defense but is what we think he is on offense. We drop a few more games like the UK game because we can't get in the lane. That's gonna create frustration from the guys who know Freddie can help this team.

So Barnes should be making personal decisions based on the feelings of other underperforming players?
