If you're suggesting that Fairley is even CLOSE to being as good as Suh...

No, that's what you're suggesting. I'm suggesting that game illustrates how effective a dominate DT can be against spread offenses focused on attacking the perimeter.

If Fairley has a good game auburn wins by four td s.

If there is pressure right up the middle the oregon spread won't do anything. The qb will read the end but take in the amount of time the ball is snapped to the qb in a shotgun formation a well as the reading of the play and a dominant dt will dismantle it 80% of the time.

Passing plays are virtuallythe same. Pressure up the middle will usually destroy it.

Which is why Auburn's pass D is 109th in the country, eh?

Cal held Oregon to 15 by controlling the line of scrimmage. :ermm:

LaMichael James was playing hurt in that game. If you've got access to the video, take a look at the difference in speed during that game of Barner and James. Barner was much quicker that day. And that just isn't the case when James is healthy. Oregon never talks about injuries, but all I'll say is James was hurting.

So holding that game out as an indicator that Oregon can't handle Auburn's defense is a mistake.

That and their gameplan. The weakside S played QB spy, CB's man, and blitzed the strongside if I remember correctly.

This is the first year where I am not rooting against some team in awhile...I don't really mind who wins, but I'll probably root for Auburn.

I watched the game. And though James was eventually hurt(in the game), Cal did as ASU did, smothered and controlled the line of scrimmage. Hence the results.

I never claimed Oregon couldn't handle Auburns defense.

Until the last 9 minutes of the game?

I guess...

Look, Cal held Oregon to 15 - sure. But Oregon still managed to have their way with the Bears in that fourth quarter, and they had no answer for us when it mattered the most. This on a day where DT struggled throwing, and his receivers uncharacteristically dropped a number of routine passes.

Yeah, and note how much crisper the offense looked on that last clock-draining drive with Barner in the game.

The Ducks could have easily scored on that drive. Facts are facts. They opted to kneel inside Cal's 5 yard line, though.

That "blueprint" has really never manifested itself, and I don't expect it to on January 10th either.

After watching Oregon at Neyland earlier this year, i told my buddy then "that's the national champion". I think Oregon can beat Auburn. If AU plays lights out at the line of scrimmage then maybe that helps and if newton runs free and makes some incredible plays then that helps. At the end of the day, if OR gets it going, I think they wear out the front 4 of AU and score a lot of points to win.

By the way, what was the news I heard today about someone having a sprained ankle? Anyone know?

Aairon Savage, starting safety for Auburn, will be out.

Cal sucks. They shouldn't have had an answer, they were clueless for much of the season. Regardless, They still controlled the line of scrimmage and held the Ducks to 15.

And beaten Cal by 9 instead? Impressive. :hi:

Unless Chizik is switching to a 3-4 for the title game, they won't have the same defensive success against the Ducks that Cal did. Oregon's offense eats 4-3's for lunch once it gets rolling. Doesn't matter who is up front.

This season, you're probably right.

I wouldn't be shocked if Auburn came out and played in a 4-2-5.

Oregon usually spreads, has a number of receivers that can block, and the OL is centered around guards and tackles that are very fleet afoot and can pull effectively every play. Ducks would get 5-10 yards at will against a 4-2-5. 3-4 with OLB's that can read and have top-notch lateral quickness is really the only way to effectively stop Kelly's O.
