'10 CA ATH Ronald Powell

Vader has it at 30. 28 annual scholly limit + 2 available from 2009...

A little confused here. Are you talking about 28 signees, because you can only have 25 scholarships per year that can be added for each class and only if you have room. Maybe I am reading what you wrote wrong.

Having a player commit to signing a NLI is not the same thing as a scholarship. The school cannot have more than 25 new sholarships added for the year. The only exception is if there are spots from the previous class that early enrollees can be backcounted into. If UT can add 30 scholarship players to the roster for 2010 than there must be 5 open spots on the roster that early enrollees can back count into for 2009. I thought UT only had 2 spots from other posters on here. Which would only allow UT to bring in 27 players that would receive a scholarship next year. This has nothing to do with the number of players that sign a NLI.

Its 30 or 31 Tide, I forget. Vader has a thread about it and if he's correct then we can bring in that number. He explains it pretty well.

I have read his thread but I believe he is saying that UT can sign 30 players, but they can still only give out 25 scholarships to players in the 2010 class and can backcount players into the 2009 class if room is availible. What a team can sign and what a team can give in scholarships are two different things.

Per NCAA

Current rules allow FBS institutions to provide scholarships to 25 new student-athletes per year.

So your saying we cant get 30 scholarship players for our 2010 class? Im confused. Or are you just saying we can only get 25 guys on NSD? If thats what your saying then we can easily get 5 early enrollees. If I'm totally wrong I apologize.

UT can give out 30 scholarships to the Seniors who compose the '10 class, but if they do then 5 must be backcounted to the '09 class. That way you do not violate the 25 rule. This class if UT does sign 30 will have atleast Half of that class enrolling in UT in January. Now all of this is mute if UT goes above the 85 limit and if signing 30 does then they cannot sign 30. It's a paper game...

NCAA
1. No More than 25 scholarships per year
2. No More than 85 scholarships per team
3. If the previous year you did not sign 25 and your not at the 85 limit then you can backcount to the previous class up to that class' 25 or the 85 limit whichever comes first.

SEC
1. No more than 28 signees per year (this is for those recruits you don't expect to gain admission) (Nutt Rule) Still only 25 can be part of the '10 class

What I am saying is that a school can only add 25 scholarships per year, and only if it does not exceed the total of 85 max. If UT can backcount 5 scholarships to the 2009 class than they can bring in a total of 30 for next year. 25 would count towards 2010 and 5 backcounted to 2009. That would mean that UT only gave out 20 scholarships for 2009. If this is correct then they can bring in 30 scholarship players next year. It would also mean that the 2009 and 2010 classes would have 50 of the total 85 scholarships alotted locked up. Meaning there would only be 35 scholarships left for the 2011 and 2012 classes combined.

The 28 signing rule has nothing to do with scholarships. It allows a school to oversign a class by 3 assuming that atleast 3 might not qualify. These are 28 players that sign a NLI on NSD in February, but the scholarship contract are finalized by each school on June 1st. I believe what LV was saying is that UT has two spots to backcount so the the school could sign 28 players plus the 2 that backcount towards the 2009 class. But of the 28 players only 25 can receive scholarships plus the two backcounts would give UT 27 players that actually can be added to the rostor for 2010.

Better breakdown than mine probably. What I had read is that UT can only backcount two to 2009 according to the threads on here. If so only 27 players. I also just added several quotes from the NCAA and a link to their guide for coaches and schools to be certified in the other thread.

- We can sign 30...
- We can hand out 27 scholarships
- The remaining 3 players would have to either be placed in JUCO or Prep or they would have to be greyshirted

Some are going on players signed when in actuality its players admitted to school. My understanding also is those put on scholarship after the practice starts (ie walk-ons with 2 years on the team) do not count in thsi total...therefore UT has 4 or 5 backcounts available

I believe they only count towards the 85 not the current year amount. Like Colin Peek who transferred in for us. He sat out last year, but this year he is apart of the 85 but does not count towards any class. The with Phelon Jones who transferred in this year for us.

They can sign 28 for the '10 class (SEC Rule) and 4 or 5 for the '09 class but they can only admit 25 in the '10 class and up to 5 in the '09 class

It's something like that.

Actually I guess I might be wrong on that one.

15.5.6.3.4 Nonrecruited Student-Athlete Receiving Institutional Financial Aid. [FBS/FCS] A
student-athlete not recruited by the institution who receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree
on athletics ability) after beginning football practice becomes a counter but need not be counted as an initial
counter until the next academic year if the institution has reached its initial limit for the year in question.
However, the student-athlete shall be considered in the total counter limit for the academic year in which
the aid was first received.

A walk-on is usually someone not recruited by the school but attends it anyway and then shows up. I believe anyone recruited that shows up without money is counted the same.

USC lost to UW, if Urbie did not get the commit this weekend then we have a good chance with Powell.

Watching Monte versus watching UF was no contest. They had better players and they played like crap. They could not get bone crushing sacks on a QB who played like absolute garbage.
