'10 CA QB Chase Rettig

this may be the scenario

Rees is #2.....Mason is #2 backup if Rees gets impatient

Rettig is #1 if Scroggins goes elsewhere......Scroggins and Rettig will not go to same school

rees article a few days back said that the staff said he could be their #2
new mason article said TN is back in the picture and that the staff says he can be #2 (or so i thought)

Staff said Mason can be one of the two QBs in this class not that he is #2.

The way I see it there are two list. First there is a list for a #1 QB-Scroggins then Rettig, there is a second list for our project QB which includes Rees, Mason, and Grayson. I am rooting hard for Grayson in that group.

Rettig has been told and he has been quoting as saying he is getting offer if Scroggins goes else where. He is the only one that has said that. The Rees offer rumor is the only thing I don't get unless the staff knows something about him we don't.

I don't think Rees has an offer. I think he may have some form of a verbal but not a hard offer but who knows. The only info on this was from TOS and no article or quote as far as I knew.

Rivals has him listed with an offer.

I believe this is probably the way it is. Scroggins is our #1 and if we don't get him, Rettig will be our #1. You are right, no way they go to the same school. Then we try to get a commitment from any of these 3, Rees, Mason and maybe Grayson, and it will probably be first come, first serve. Any of them would be considered #2.

I am not denying it just saying it is strange. I guess as a fan I have no video to look at of him as far as I know. He played againt low level competition so it is either something we get if we get him like a package or when the coaches saw him they were blown away. Since Notre Dame and Stanford have offerred it does make me feel better.

That is how I understood the staff's comments to be. If the staff offers Retteig, it will be in place of Scroggins, not to back him up. They would be happy to take Retteig and Rees as 1 and 2 if they can't get Scroggins, IMO.

They must see some upside, and maybe he has good connections with the IL recruits this year. They need some bodies next summer/fall, and with some upside they must see, I think that they would be pleased if he were one of those bodies.

Ive not seen any video on him, but everything I read about him seems to indicate that hes is very athletic. Not in a dual threat QB kinda way, but just a natural athlete. Id be excited to have someone like that at UT myself.

The Video I saw of him showed him to be extremely accurate, athletic, fast and able to throw from multiple arm positions like a shortstop. The minus is arm strength on passes over 15 yards he seems to be all arm still. He needs to learn how to step into these and use his legs.

I really don't expect to get Rees as our #2. If he were willing to come as a #2 QB why wouldn't he have committed already, considering we haven't signed anybody and he supposedly already has an offer. I just feel like if he were gonna come here, he would have already committed instead of waiting until we have a Scroggins or Rettig committed.

He's looking at Stanford, Notre Dame, and us. He would likely be the number 2 QB at any of those. I don't think that Stanford has taken a bigger name this year (at least I don't think Lloyd is a bigger name), but Nunes was more highly touted last year. Hendrix would likely be a favorite over him at ND. Retteig or Scroggins would likely be a favorite over him at UT. So, as I see it, he recognizes that he is not going to be the biggest catch by those schools...he just has to figure out where his best chances will be and where he wants to play/be coached.

Actually Stanford took Nunes Last year who was a 4*, along with Taysom Hill who was a 3* and they have a commitment for the 2010 class already, Dallas Lloyd who is a 3*. All of them are actually rated higher than Rees.

Also, Notre not only took Hendrix for the 2010 class, they also signed 5* Dayne Crist in 2008, who is playing behind Jimmy Clausen.

This is why I think if Rees was going to commit to UT, he would have done so already, instead of waiting until we get other commitments.

Your first paragraph is basically what I said, with the exception of Taysom Hill. Rees is a 3*, isn't he? That's why I was reluctant to put Lloyd that far ahead of him...regardless, he's still no better than number 2 there.

The coaches have told him that he would be number 2 here...so why would he rush to commit here? He isn't going to scare off Retteig/Scroggins, so why not wait and see how the situation shakes out. If we offer Retteig soon (with open offers to Scroggins and Retteig on the table at the same time), then you might seem him in a bigger hurry to commit - but I don't see that happening. We will only offer Retteig if we are pretty sure we aren't in the running for Scroggins.

Rettig, IMO, is going to blow up this fall with the team he transferred to this summer. Even if we land him now, it will be tough to hold on to him because other teams will enter the race with him.

Yes, Rees is a 3* but has an overall lower rating. Not much difference. I think he is a 5.5 and the other 3* guys were 5.6 and 5.7.

You make some very good points and you could be right. I just feel like if he thinks he will be #2 anyways, why not commit to UT now regardless of who else we get. Regardless of what players and how many stars they have that have committed to ND and Stanford, UT still leads in the depth chart area. By not signing a QB in the last two classes, we are clearly in need.

I think we should only take one commitment right now. The QB list / rank / whatever is going to change this fall. There are just not any slam dunks out there.

Rather than taking two commitments this summer, wait for those few players that might show they are the top guys this fall?? Even if committed elsewhere, run hard at them in December / January. Be easier to do if you have one commitment rather than two IMO.

There is no QBs in the class at this point who are slam dunks to compete for starts in 2010. In Decemebr, there could be a few that fit that scenario.

I would even go as far to say 2011. I just don't see a college ready QB in the HS ranks this year.

If Chase has the kind of senior year that everyone thinks he is capable of having he will skyrocket up the ladder. I still say hold out for Scroggins, but I feel much better about this kid after reading the reports on him in the last competition. Seems like he is getting better and better. He is learning too. There were criticisms that he did not change the pace of his balls, and that he lacked touch. That was not the case this last time. His accuracy is there too. Kid must have some great upside! Heaps Shmeaps!

I see what you are saying and it makes a lot of sense. While I agree with you, I really believe we are going to take two, or at least try. The reason I say this, I don't see why we would offer Rees and not Rettig yet, if we were going to take only one QB in this class. What if Rees committed today and Scroggins hasn't even made an announcement yet and Rettig hasn't even been offered?

The coaches wouldn't let it happen like that honestly. They would try their best to go in order of the board.

Do you think if Rees committed today and Scroggins commits on the 25th we would tell Rees he was no longer welcome or would be just take two?

Offers don't necessarily mean if the kid gets ready to commit, we take the commitment. Hendrix was ready to commit in May.

Would we take Scroggins if he wants to commit on July 25th? Yes, they would.

Would they take Rees if he was ready to commit on July 15th? Maybe, maybe not. If they knew Scroggins was headed to USC they might take Rees. If they didn't know, they likely would not take Rees.

If Scroggins goes USC on 25th, will they than offer Retting? I'm not convinced yet they ever will offer Retting. Something is holding them back and it is not scaring off Scroggins.

Offers don't mean when or if a kid is ready to commit they take the commitment. Most of the time, timing plays into the process

Purely my speculation

As usual, you make some very good points. I guess we will all just have to wait and see how it plays out. These next few weeks are going to be very interesting to say the least.
