As long as the schools are the ones reporting them, it's usually fine unless an absolutely crazy number come up (i'm thinking 30s or higher).

Now if the NCAA is the one finding all of them and the school's not reporting/hiding them, I think some sort of punishment might be able to come of that

if it can be proven that the secondary violation are knowingly being committed to aid in recruiting then there can be some punishment.

i agree.

So if they arent a big deal why turn them in?

I think the NCAA somewhat holds the school to reporting those so that they're held accountable and look like they still have control/are monitoring and managing the events and actions of the student athletes attending their university

I has that thought the other day. I did not consider it PC sending us a consolation prize though. I think it is highly unlikely. He is a RS Sophomore. He will no doubt playing at some point this season unless he has a season ending injury before it starts. Even with a release, he would still have to sit out a year (the release would only mean that UT or another school could give him a scholarship). That would leave him one year to play elsewhere. If he did transfer, I am sure that we would have a good shot because of his familiarity of the system. I would doubt this happens though.

I know, that's why I was saying 2010. He let's him transfer this year  and can start by 2010! He already has Mustain as a back up along with the other two QBs. Then Jesse comes in next year to back up Barkley! Ha ha. I highly doubt this scenario would ever happen, but just hopeful thinking! Hey anything to cheer us up right now!

... but don't confuse the odds

Here are the odds-

In the last six years Tennessee has put one QB in the NFL making league minimum. In that same amount of time USC has put 4 QBs in the NFL who have signed contracts for $50+million each. And, to add insult to injury, USC's latest $50 million QB is probably going to put Tenn's one QB in the unemployment line.

I forgot about John David Booty

So there is actually 5 in the NFL

Matt Leinart
Matt Cassell
Mark Sanchez
Carson Palmer
JDB

Yeah I understand what you are saying. You would think the majority of recruits though would know having a legitimate chance to start 4 years at an sec school(at the very worst 3) is a better route to the nfl than being a backup at USC. If he chooses USC I will understand, but if its about the NFL then I think its a no brainer to choose UT.

I question that too. You'd think a full-time starter would be the way to go, especially in this conference (though i'm not sure in what light the SEC is currently viewed as far as NFL quarterbacks). Unfortunately USC just currently has this massive draw/reputation right now about developing QBs to the NFL level that UT can't really match without having an offensive coordinator named david cutcliffe...

I'm really getting sick of this kid. Does anyone else think it's ridiculous that govols.com is quoting his myspace page in reporting that his announcement has been moved to Thursday?

espn says he is still announcing today. and its kinda weird that on his myspace he put 3:00 for us to watch instead of just caring bout california time

Yes. I'm working on trying to get confirmation from ESPN on the date/time.

It has been quoted here several times also.; by different posters, not Freak.

I am to the point where I do not even want to watch his announcement on ESPN because it's gotten stupid the attention these kids are demanding...Don't get me wrong I want Jesse to come here and succeed and lord knows We need him but remember, He's going to have 3 hats up on the table and he's going to choose one and nobody has a clue what he's going to do with the others...Might use them as frisbee's for all We know...Could potentially hurt us recruiting wise if he picks UF...Could try to humiliate us in the process and would have the chance to do so...Just get it over with and PICK and stop being a prima donna about the whole thing.

NFL QBs are from all sorts of places. No one is even close to having a monopoly on that position.

Cassel is an exception to a rule. The rule is you must play in college football to get drafted by the NFL. It doesn't matter how many times you give Cassel as an example, it doesn't change the fact that far, far, far more SC pine riders never saw the light of day in the League.

Your argument that whatever happened most recently is predictive of what will happen next is analogous to betting on the horse with the worst odds in next year's Kentucky Derby since Mine that Bird won last year.

Bet away... but don't confuse the odds. They are squarely against pine riders making it in the League. If they weren't the Matt Cassel story wouldn't be discussed.

I never said that Cassel was something that would happen again, nor was he a trend that would soon be repeated. And I know that QBs come from everywhere. What I was saying though, was that the Cassel thing was something that happened just recently and that people still know about, so USC will - and is very much entitled to - use him when talking to recruits and making pitches and will continue to till he loses his job. I wasn't talkin about recent activity guaranteeing what would happen later...you misunderstood my point.

If you look back at the post the guy above yours quoted from me....nevermind i'll just go ahead and quote it:

I dont mean that they literally use that as a recruiting pitch. But it kind of makes it almost a school where you can do no wrong at quarterback (well unless you do something really stupid that gets you kicked off the team or out of the school).

It's kinda almost like the draw of some of the more competitive students to go to the top ranked med school - which i think are like harvard, penn, and washington univ. in st. louis right now. Sure, there are obviously going to be better doctors than you b/c the numbers are against you and how good you are is based on how you do not where you went. Still, you're going to get a serious look by employers though b/c of that place's history of success in that field and that they don't just take/recruit anyone

I never was talking about Cassel trends or recent, low-chance instances meaning that they were guaranteed to happen again in the future. As in my above quote, neither football players nor doctors are judged solely based on where they went, b/c there are so many others excelling in so many different areas. Both are fields where your actual success in your specialty determine how well you actually do. However if one goes to the premier place for teaching/developing your specialty - say the top med school - then well the employers are going to give that person some serious consideration when they look at him b/c of where he went, b/c of not only that place's rep of success for developing someone in a field but also their rep for how selective they are in who they take to teach...

Right now, that's what USC is as far as for QBs who want to play professionally later on. It gets QBs that extra look.
