'10 FL ATH Matt Elam

From Scout.com

Elam took an official visit to Tennessee this past weekend and came away more than impressed with the Volunteers.

“It was a great trip and a great time,” Elam told InsideTennessee.com Sunday evening. “I could believe how intense the game was and how crazy the crowd was.”

One thing that stood out to Elam was the Tennessee coaching staff.

“Coach Kiffin has assembled one of the best coaching staffs in the country,” Elam said. “I got to visit with Monte Kiffin a lot. It’s amazing how much he knows about defense and great a coach he really is. It would be an honor to play for him.”

Elam was also impressed with how everyone knew who he was.

“All the fans recognized me,” Elam said. “Everyone is like a big happy family at Tennessee. I’m impressed with how close the team is with this new coaching staff.”

Is Elam still committed to Florida?

“Right now I am,” Elam said. “I’m considering all my options; Tennessee is definitely one of those options.”

Elam is scheduled to graduate in December, so a final decision will likely occur in the next month or so.

“The Tennessee coaches are telling me that I would have the opportunity to be the next Eric Berry type of player for their program,” Elam said. “I loved the way they are promoting Berry, all the videos and billboards. Hey that could be me one day.”

Elam got the chance to hang out with Berry and was impressed with the standout defender.

“He is such a great person, very easy to talk to,” Elam said. “He is a great player; he really loves the University of Tennessee.”

The importance of EB can't be downplayed in this. Eric Berry may very well be the best recruiter we have for Elam. I know a sought after recruit last season who's main draw to the school he ended up at was an older player at his position and the friendship they developed. They talked quite frequently. These friendships, relatiosnhips, recruitments last longer than the one or two days EB showed him around campus.

Last week, He said publicly that if NSD was that day, he would be signing with WVU. That doesn't sound like a committed player to me...

May not sound like it, but he is. If hes not then why not just say it?

There is no reason for him not to. Gator nation seems to be expecting it so its not like the pressure is going to be any higher.

If he is so dead set on not going to Florida he would have decomitted by now IMO. I think hes trying to force Floridas hand more than anything.

EB is the one reason we are even getting looked at by this kid.

He said he would sign with WVU. Take that however you want...

Yeah cause he wants to the next EB..got it. I can read posts as well as you. I'm saying the friendship they may develop off the field could be as important as anything EB does on the field. It isn't just about showing him around campus or putting in EB highlight tapes. They're real people. Pay attention in algebra.

I will. But it still doesnt change the fact he is STILL committed to Florida. What reason would he have to still be committed if he still didnt have them at the top?

His info seems to be solid. I was skeptical when he posted his info about Shakim Phillips last week, but it turned out to be spot on. However, I didn't enjoy some of his info this week...

There is a chance Elam could play LB. If we somehow had Elam, Riley, Janzen, and Myles, you can bet that someone is getting moved somewhere. We are going to get our best players on the field...

40 time is the most overrated stat in football...

What info our you referring to LV?

Portion of the article linked that I found a bit....distasteful...

“I was thinking that could be me,” Elam said of watching Berry. “He’s getting all that attention and fame and they promote him. He’ll be leaving and someone has to come in and be better than him and make plays."

Egotistical much?

What's Meyer's relationship with his family? I keep hearing this but I never heard what it is.

Is Matt Elam brother Abram Elam who plays for the Browns? Looks Abram Elam started his college career at Notre Dame then transferred to Kent State. He is also from Florida and playes safety in the NFL. Could that be the family connection Myer has?

Your right. I think Rex posted this earlier like on Page 1 (I'm losing my mind.):

"That had a lot to do with it," said Elam, whose family has a relationship with Meyer dating back to his brother Abram's recruitment to Notre Dame when Meyer was a Fighting Irish assistant. "I know what he is about. My brother told me a lot of good things about him. We have conversations. We have a relationship. We have a real good relationship that I don't think any other player and coach have.
"The coaches have shown my family and me lots of love."

Dude, you obviously don't understand how football recruiting works...

Here's a little backstory on the Elam's. I haven't seen it posted but I was searching Abram Elam and found this which really makes sense that Meyer is really close to the Elam family since they were close at Notre Dame. Crazy stuff.

Since 1987, three of Elam's siblings have been shot to death. His older brother, Donald Runner, was fatally shot in 1987. His sister, Christina Elam, was killed in 1999. On May 9, 2008, his older brother Donald Elam was fatally shot; at age 14, Donald Elam was once the youngest person ever indicted for murder in Palm Beach County, though he was later acquitted.

Elam's younger brother Matt, a high school Junior, is currently committed to play football at the University of Florida. Matt Elam is rated the nations #5 overall prep prospect in the class of 2010 according to Rivals.com.
