junder, you also have to remember that Monte loves moving a guy up a position. A safety becomes an LB, an LB a DE, a DE a DT etc.

Seems like we have way too many stud DEs we are pursuing until you think about what Monte can do with a giant LB and an undersized DT with all his schemes. If you are freakishly strong and fast, you will star in a Monte Kiffin defense.

Jimmy Johnson pioneered those Position Moves and I havent seen Monte move any players
You're gonna have to give me examples of the players he's converted with success

This is completely and utterly false.

They have the exact opposite philosophy of what Chavis had.

Both Monte and Lance Thompson prefer bigger linebackers and safeties.

Eric Berry...

The Death Of The Tampa 2 | National Football Post

Read about the description, LBs sized like safeties, requiring a freakishly fast MLB who can run with a WR.

As someone else wrote:
Kiffin's defensive tackles may be as large as other linemen, but to play in his scheme, they must also be fast. His defensive ends look more like linebackers, and his linebackers look more like safeties. Having faster players at all positions enables the defense to line up in what an opposing QB will read as a Cover 2 and then to shift into a Cover 3 with the middle linebacker dropping back into pass protection in a middle zone a bit more shallow than the zones for which the safeties are responsible. Speed is essential not only for the MLB responsible for covering a receiver but also for the folks rushing the QB so that the passer doesn't have time to get comfortable and into that nasty pick-apart-the-zone groove.

Look also at who he is recruiting now and for which positions.

I dont get that response? Eric Berry?

Eric berry is still a SS, he just moves to the Box vs the spread because of his skill set and match ups. also our LB core needs as much help as possible. there was no conversion there.

Monte still isnt converting players, he's just playing players with a certain skill set.
warren Sapp derrick Brooks were freakeshly great speedy athletes at their position. it doesnt mean they were switched to those positions just cus they have speed.

Bigger and faster is really preferable?....

Of course, but the statement is true that he would rather take a speedster and put weight on him than have a giant guy.

There will be no T Cody on a Kiffin defense, but we are recruiting the heck out of DEs and some of them who can carry the weight will convert to DTs. Also for LB we are not getting "bigger" LBs in the sense of 245-250 run stoppers, we are getting tall lanky and athletic guys who can run in pass coverage.

Chavis and Monte disagree about lots thank God because I was sick of 3rd and Chavis, but for you to say that Monte does not have smaller and faster guys in the Tampa 2 than other teams in the NFL at the same position is really an odd position to take.

Wyche drafted Brooks, Lynch, and Sapp but they fully flourished under Monte. Sapp is a physical freak, maybe Marvin Austin is similar today, but if you look around lots of the other players who Monte coached, you will the emphasis is on speed not size.

Brian Kelly is 5'11.
Simeon Rice 6'5 270 or less throughout his time in Tampa.
Dexter Jackson 6'0 200 or less...

Exactly. This staff wont move players around non-stop like the previous staff did.

They will recruit guys that player Linebacker that will fit their scheme and they will recruit safeties that will fit their scheme.

Like you said they move Berry around all over the field but he's still the strong safety in the Tampa 2, not a Linebacker at all.

Care to continue showing the bigger linebackers and safeties that Monte Kiffin prefers?

If by bigger you mean not Cody Riggs, we both agree entirely that for CB, S, LB etc Monte prefers bigger guys.

If you are saying that it is utterly false that Kiffin in his scheme uses smaller (skinnier) guys who are faster than other teams in other schemes run, I will say you want to do more research.

Montell, do you think we are recruiting Jones as a LB or is it a foregone conclusion he'll be a DE-convert ala Chris Walker?

MikeHamiltonFan, I love your passion and get what you're saying but there is a difference in Chavis (who epitomizes what you're saying) and Monte, who recruits athletes but not necessarily w/ the idea of converting down (S-LB, LB-DE, DE-DT). This will happen though because guys continue growing after h.s. and none are fully developed physically (except maybe Luc lol).

I think Jones will stay at LB but that's jmo...

I think you're right. Some have said DE but I just don't think Monte would visit his school during the off-week if we knew we'd move him to DE, considering the DEs we already have and are still pursuing hard (ie, one of my personal favs Chris Martin). I do believe the conversion is a possibility but not certainty. Someone mentioned Lance Thompson, which is interesting b/c he does prefer bigger LBs and has done very well w/ them (Hightower, McClain, etc). So, in short, I agree w/ you Vader and think Jones is being pursued heavily by us as a LB, not DE.

I doubt that to be honest. He wants to play early but he also wants to play with the best.

many have said if not florida state he will pick tennessee. it has also been brought up that luc does not want that b/c he fears competition. however, luc does not realize he is a mlb and that christian jones would be an olb or even a defensive end. i hope it works out that we get both

Honestly, I think Luc projects better to a strong side backer than MLB. Out of this class, Taylor is looking like a sure fit for MLB.

Luc's size may keep him inside. He is 240+. You need guys like Micheal Taylor to be on the outside.

Vols fighting for recruits in Alabama GoVolsXtra

You may want to tell Coach Thompson that I am wrong and that under Monte's system they will not be using smaller and faster guys but will be sticking with the giant guys he recruited at Alabama.

its easy to find big guys...and its easy to find guys who can run...but its hard to find big guys who can run and I think thats what the staff is trying to do.

Luc and jones are big guys who can run and that why they are probably 1a and 1b on our linebacker board right now.

Yeah, his dad went to.
"According the GoldHelmet.com, Christian Jones, the No. 1-ranked player in the Sentinel's Central Florida Top 100 for 2010, took a two-day visit to South Bend, Ind., with his father this weekend. They took in the Irish victory over Boston College on Saturday."
I still would not count out Monte though!
