'10 GA QB Hutson Mason

It's not always about playing for the best school though. The playing time at Iowa will be early and he is right about Hawkeye football being all Iowa has. Not a lot of people in Iowa care about Iowa State football and nobody cares about basketball. I know because I have lived in Iowa, including Iowa City. They are nuts about football and if you're not a Hawkeye fan, they basically cry about it and hate you. Not to mention, all there is to do in Iowa City is drunk. I am pretty sure radius wise they are close to the top for a city. The city is pretty small and compact. If you're walking around the college area, you'll see two parties for every 10 houses you pass and you can just walk in the yard and join everyone. Obviously that isn't the environment that a lot of football players need be involved with but that's all there is to do in Iowa City. He said himself that he likes the idea of being a celebrity. You can be known as a big time stud in Knoxville but in Iowa City, everybody wants to know you personally and they will do ANYTHING that talk to you or hang out with you. The odds are that they probably will hang out with you at a part at some point because Iowa City isn't very big.

I should stress that I don't like the Hawkeyes but my time in Iowa City wasn't bad. The partying there is pretty crazy. Just looked it up and they are 12 on Princeton's 2009 list. Tennessee is 16th so they are probably on par. Iowa City is a lot different though, I can't stress how small it is lol. They still sell out 70,000 no problem and quite a few people meet up at each others apartments at 5 in the morning to start drinking and hit the streets drunk before 6.

Anyways, he may very well go somewhere else. Iowa City is just a lot different than most places and he sounded like he enjoyed that aspect in his interview.

Should also note that Iowa doesn't care as much about recruiting as we do. On game day, they are equal to Tennessee fans. We definitely care more about football during the off season. No doubt about that. :D

Hutson's Stats through his first 4 games:

4-0 record
completed 74% of his passes for 1,118 yards, 12 TDs, and 3 INTs
Mason threw for 450 yards and four scores last week.
"I also had two called back," Mason said. "I threw a 75-yard touchdown pass and one of 35 yards. Honestly, I couldn't have written a better start. Last season I missed state record by five yards but my coach said I broke the state record single game passing record this past week for 5A."

Per Rivals... He's killing it...

If I remember correctly, he completed 70%+ last year. I thought his highlights looked good. What is the knock on him that he is not more highly recruited?

LV, where does he stand with our staff?

We aren't really pursuing any QB right now. We were making some contact with him before we got Bray. He's lumped in that group of QBs who could get a look as the #2 QB if he has a big senior year and shows a lot of improvement. Mason, Munchie, Grayson, Kaiser, and Shreve are a few that are there...

What about Newton? He is killing it at Blinn as well. Scored 5 or 6 TD's the other week.

I wasn't really considering Newton in with the high school QBs. We have interest in him too though, probably more than the QBs I named...

Thanks, Vader. I really appreciate your insight and all of the information you provide over here. Keep it coming!

Apparently, his noodle is working just fine! That's crazy!

I know arm strength isnt the MOST important thing when considering a QB.....but you gotta be able to stick the 15yd out against tight coverage to succeed at the big time D1 level as a QB.....not sure this kid has the arm for that, but I certainly wouldnt mind giving him the chance to prove me wrong.

While arm strength is very important, touch is also very important. Montana did not have a very strong arm, but put up a few numbers at SF.

Guys, I have seen Mason twice last year and once this year. BJ was a better HS QB than this young man.
His high completion rate is a product of the no huddle, dink and dunk, throw the ball 95% of all their plays offense that Lassiter runs. 50% of the passes he completes are behind or right at the line of scrimmage to a back as a dump off.
If we offer, we are just bringing in a body.

good insight...thanks

Last night, Mason only got to play the 1st half. In that half, he was 10-15 for 202 yards, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs...

Better insight?

I could have had those stats against Wheeler. A good pop warner team can beat them.
Insight that.

I really like this kid but I agree with you TTV.

He's a very heady player, very accurate but certainly doesn't have a rifle arm to force a ball in if necessary. But, like BJ, he will make some 1AA or mid-level 1A team a fine QB. Best of luck to him as I certainly have enjoyed watching him play over the past 2 years. BTW ... his team is now 6-0 but heading into the hardest part of their schedule.

Milton no problem for Lassiter | ajc.com

The Trojans’ senior quarterback passed for 545 yards, breaking the state’s all-time single-game record, to lead Lassiter to a 56-32 victory against Milton on Friday night......The previous record, which had stood for 32 years, was set by Lamar County’s Ron Hinson against Troup in 1977. Mason was 32 of 45 with six touchdowns and completed passes to 10 different receivers.
