'10 GA QB Hutson Mason

Guys,
This crap is why most of us do not come over to this forum much.
GROW UP!

Ok, so offering two opposing views of an issue is something that keeps you out of here. I apologize, I'll try to be much more agreeable in the future.

If it was on the subject, it would be different.
Freak has begged, it just doesn't seem to be sinking in.

oh good grief who cares let them argue it is called a FORUM. If you dont like it, scroll. its the middle of summer what else is there to do but argue useless crap and moan about why Kiffin hasnt brought in the second coming of Andy Kelly?

How is debating the programs that have offered the prospect this thread is dedicated to "off topic"??

When did UT offer?
That is the point, you are arguing something that is not an issue until we offer him.
IF we offer him, we are hurting for bodies, BIG TIME!

you are right, sorry

I didn't know there was criteria for when to start discussing a prospect. Not having an offer doesn't mean when can't discuss the prospect and who they are considering. Now if we were talking about microwaves and pantyhose or something, you would have a point.

My point is the kid should wait it out to see if his Sr year gets him better offers.

As Iowa stands right now, I'd rather play for a Sunbelt or Conf USA team.

See what you started with the Iowa comment :)

I see your point, but, it is a HUGE risk to wait too long. Iowa is a good solid program that will be good every few years.

As it stands, it is not debateable that Iowa is a better football team than Tennessee. Like I mentioned, Iowa has three finishes in the Top-8 in the last seven years. 70-53 in the last ten years doesn't look that great, but Ferentz's first two years he had inherited some awful talent and won about three games combined.

Last year the South Carolina game was 31-0 by halftime, if I recall correctly, and the Gamecocks made our Vols look silly. Iowa will be very good again this year, much better than the Vols I'd wager. To deprecate the Hawks is throw your own team under the bus (something I'm not willing to do).

All I'm saying is that its pretty silly for Vols fans, coming off a 5-7 record and a home loss to Wyoming, to act like Iowa is inferior.

yes, but, would Mason look good in it?

Congratulations on succeeding to get this thread more of topic than it already was. If you don't like what is being discussed, then go on somewhere. Discussing the magnitude of an Iowa offer is completely relevant to the conversation.

Namath pulled it off and he was pretty good. Of course one could argue that very fetish lead to his knee problems and ultimately to him abusing his liver to such a degree he truly was struggling.

Well based off of the pictures available of him, I'm going to say no...

Seriously, if we offer this kid and he commits, awesome... If we don't offer, that's fine... Saying he's not worth our offer because no other "top tier" program hasn't offered is ludacris.

"No he shouldn't. Iowa is terrible in a very weak Big 10."

The Big 10 may or may not be 'down' the past few years, but it is simply not factual to say that Iowa is "terrible".

There is no question about it. The Big 10 is a shadow of its former self and has fallen significantly behind the SEC, Big12, and Pac10. As late as 5 or 6 years ago, I argued with SEC fans that the Big10 was the strongest conference top to bottom. That simply isn't close to being true right now. The ONLY BCS conference I'm sure is behind them now is the Big East... and that's changing over time.

Iowa IS terrible right now. One year doesn't salvage the last 4. The Hawkeyes are 7-5, 6-7, 6-6, and 9-4 with losses over that period to: Pitt, NW (X3), ISU (X2), Indiana (good grief... X2), Purdue, and W Michigan in a bowl game.

Except for last year, Iowa has been at the bottom or in the lower half of the Big10 in scoring O since 2004... and that's a conference not known for scoring.

If Iowa were a good program right now, they'd be competing with OSU year in, year out. Michigan is down leaving a huge void. Wisconsin isn't what they were. Only PSU has emerged at all from that second tier... Iowa is a team that's been unimpressive in a recently weak conference.

As of now, Iowa is coming off what was by far a better year than Tennessee, including a 9-4 record,
If UT played in the Big 10 last year they wouldn't have finished any worse than 9-4.

the Doak Walker award winner, a coveted head coach, five draft picks, and a New Years Day obliteration of a South Carolina squad that, as we all know, the Vols were smacked around by.

So you are comparing one of the worst teams UT has ever had to one of the best teams Iowa has had (record wise) in the past 30 years?

Whether or not the Vols ought to offer Mason is another issue, but to act as if Iowa is "terrible" is silly.

If I were Mason, I would only sign with Iowa as a last resort before playing for an FCS school.

FTR, I live in Missouri and think Iowa is a nice place... it isn't anything against Iowa or even Iowa football.

Right now, like it or not, Iowa is a better football team than Tennessee. Recruiting accessibility/propensity for Ferentz and Kiffin is, however, an entirely different matter altogether.

I have no idea simply because I have no idea how good UT actually is. I do KNOW however that Iowa is a mediocre team in a weak conference.

IMHO, they would not have had a winning record in the SEC, Pac10, or Big12 last year. ISU who went 2-10 in the Big 12 lost to Iowa 17-5 and outgained Iowa. They allowed Iowa only 122 yds passing and 122 rushing. ISU didn't hold a single Big 12 opponent under 30 pts. They were tied for 10th in scoring O and 10th in scoring D... IOW's, a bad football team.

Are you really sure you want to brag about a win over USCe? On the season they avg'd giving up more points than they scored. As bad as UT was on O, USC was just slightly better... and UT was better on D.

IOW's, USC was a pretty bad team also. Clemson whose 7-6 record got their coach fired beat them just as badly as Iowa did...

You can surmise how college coaches view a prospect easily by looking at their offer sheet. Mason is also different from a lot of the QBs that are still out there and not being recruited heavily because he has a ton of film that's been out for awhile and there's plenty to go by. If he was a legit prospect at this point, there would be good schools on his offer list. There are not.

So, pretty much what you are saying, is that Hutson Mason and Chase Rettig are not "legit prospects" since their offer lists suck?

If UT played in the Big 10 last year they wouldn't have finished any worse than 9-4.

We lost to WYOMING, my friend. There is absolutely NO WAY of knowing what would happen...

And Iowa completely destroyed South Carolina, a team that beat the Vols...

And I think Ferentz is a really good coach. JMO...

that's all I ask, comments be OF topic, thanks oh GREAT ONE!

You're doing an admirable job of changing the subject and inserting a red herring into the discussion.

You said that Iowa is "terrible". I noted that a team that went 9-4, dominated a USC team the Vols got humiliated by, and upset then no. 2 PSU, is not "terrible".

I went on to point out that if Iowa is "terrible", the implications for Tennessee are dire. The Vols lost, at home, to a Wyoming Cowboy team. Do not even try to tell me Tennessee is better than Iowa at this point; thats just silly. Last year Iowa would have dominated UT and most on this board are well aware of that. You are the worst kind of delusional fan, blind to the facts and willing to make outlandish claims to degrade other teams.

im not gonna disagree with you. we were very bad last year, and im not sure that switching conferences would have done us much good, unless we switched to an absolutely terrible one.

but... which team are you a fan of? i cant really figure it out. i think you should choose one, and i feel like you're leaning towards hawkeyes more than vols

Just basing it on the relative weakness of the Big 10 and the fact that Fulmer lost control of the team... again... when things started going badly. Had they played say.... more Purdues and Indianas.... they might have had more confidence.

Just an opinion but one I'm fairly confident about. The Big 10 is lagging in talent and has fallen behind in schemes and style of play. They're still playing the same style as they did in the 80's. RR found out at Michigan that the teams of the Big 10 just do not have the team speed and explosiveness that now dominates the college landscape.

And Iowa completely destroyed South Carolina, a team that beat the Vols...

So did Clemson... I don't know of anyone who claims that UT was a good team last year and especially during that time period around the Fulmer announcement. But USC was a pretty bad team too.

And I think Ferentz is a really good coach. JMO...

Fair opinion but IMHO he really isn't anything special.

He's been at Iowa 10 years. His record is 70-53 overall and 43-37 in the Big 10. He's had 4 non-winning seasons out of 10 and avg's only 7 wins a season. He had 3 10 win seasons from 02 to 04 with two ties for the Big 10 championship. All this during a time when the Big 10 was on the decline.

Just for comparison's sake... Fulmer was 85-41 over the same period with 4 SEC CG appearances. He had only 2 losing seasons in that period, avg'd 8.5 wins, and.... all this was enough to get him fired in the nation's toughest conference.
