Ya think? Go ask Kentucky about that. As far as the NCAA is concerned if you got to a UT game, buy anything with UT on it, you are a booster.
Talking to recruits on facebook is just stupid. There is no reason at all anyone on here needs to be adding them. They will never be your friend outside of that. If you are a student who met them or knows them some other way then sure, but the average joe who follows recruiting has no reason at all to look these kids up and "add" them and have any kind of conversation. Its just asking for trouble and is just plain creepy.

Didn't see that till after I posted.

Yeah, there isn't anything borderline stalking, creepy, or just plain stupid about talking to some 17 or 18 year old kid because he may choose to play football for a team you are a fan of. I mean get a life, dude. Seriously, it's pathetic. Let them have privacy.Yeah, because you've proven to be not a douche bag...

It's like a guy I know who told me about one of his friends facebook friending Bryce Brown, then sending him a message asking what number he was going to wear so he could buy his 4 year old kid a jersey. What the f ever, dude. That is just plane creepy and sad. I think talking to them in general when you don't know them is just plain sad.

yeah, this guy pretty much sums it up. :good!:
This mentality is exactly why I love living in Florida. People in FL are much more open to making friends and being social. Everyone is on FB, even people in their 30,40s,50s and 60s. It's a social networking tool that helps you stay in touch with friends/family and helps other people make friends or follow people they are interested in that they might not have contact with any other way.
Personally, I barely use Facebook except to stay in touch with people from High School or from back home.
But that doesn't mean that it isn't ok for people to make friends with recruits or anyone else in any form of media.
The people talking about it being creepy sound like they have been watching too many episodes of Dateline. You act like these recruits have no control over who they talk to, add as a contact or allow to remain a contact if that person is annnoying them.
These recruits are still just young people who are probably pretty open to meeting or having contact with other young people, potential fans and all kinds of people. If they aren't open to that then they will choose to have private accounts and won't allow people to intrude on their privacy.
Those that don't set it to private and ACCEPT friend requests from strangers are inviting that contact. Why not use Facebook as a way to get to know some of your classmates and the fanbase of your future school? This is why it is very important for people to act with class and keep in mind that they are representing the entire university in any contact they have with a recruit.
The last thing that we need is an unemotional, unaivalable fanbase and student body when dealing with recruits. Why do we paint the rock when recruits are on campus? We are trying to show them some love!
How the F is it so wrong for people to show recruits some love online when that contact is openly invited by the recruit?
Any violation of NCAA rules is another matter but do we really see the NCAA busting schools because a season ticket holder messaged a recruit on Facebook? That would be all-time stupid even for the NCAA.

Obviously, I could not disagree more. I will reiterate..... 17 and 18 year old kids who you will never meet or hang out with. Creepy...
EDIT: And "people in Tennessee" are a lot of the people doing this. A region of the country has nothing to do with why people do what they do.
It absolutely has to do with how people act. What is looked at as being "weird" in some areas is socially acceptable in others.
I grew up in TN and trust me when I tell you that FL is a much more socially accepting state. Nobody really cares what anybody else is doing unless it harms them.
From experience, a lot of close-minded people in TN care how you wear your hair, the color of the person you date's skin and all kinds of other personal aspects of your life that really don't concern them.
I brought my black roommate back home to visit family in Halls and Powell. We took him to visit my wife's Grandmother in the St. Mary's assisted living center. You could hear the gasps when we all stepped off the elevator and the room went deathly quiet while everyone stared with their mouth's open. 10 mins later a worker for the community came and told my wife's grandmother that they would prefer we "not bring the colored fellow back."
You run into that a lot less here in FL and that is just one of many examples I can give you. I love East TN but I hate the redneck mentality of a lot of the people.
I guess it's just boredom that makes people give a flying F what other people do.
