'10 OK ATH Demarco Cobbs

Cobbs will likely wind up a SS if he comes here. Is that better?

Although i think he would make a great safety, the guy seems to be a playmaker with the ball in his hands. he's also got good size and strength so i think he will def get his first shot at WR. He also went on the record to say he prefers WR over defense

I agree. He could excel at either position. But he is a very good fit for a pro-style offense with his strength and build.

*cough*Eric Berry*cough*

I am glad Tennessee didn't put Berry on the offensive side of the ball just because he is good with the ball in his hands. I would be okay with Cobbs being converted into another version of Eric Berry. Not saying he would be as good as Eric Berry but if you can use his size and physicality to lay brutal hits while also making plays after an interception... why not? :)

I do kind of wonder what Eric Berry could have done as a wide receiver though. Hmmmmmmm.

i think he would deffenatley have a real shot at the heisman this year. and i still think it was a mistake that i wouldnt have made making him a safety, well not a mistake, because hes the best in the buisness.

but we have ben misssing a bigtime playmaker for a few years, meachem was great but i think berry is quite a bit better with the ball in his hands , swain was verry good but not a home run threat, denarius moore hasent ben consistant enough yet. and gearld jones is just a good solid reciever nothing more nothing less. i would say stallworth was the last big home run threat we have had. berry could have ben a big time multi dementional player kinda like harvin was.

combineing that reasoning with the fact we have alot of capable defensive backs, none that would have done as well as EB but i dont think we would have gotten hurt. but i think it would have ben good for 1 or 2 more wins last year in that god awfull offensive system.

Nobody can say with 100% assurance that Cobbs will play WR and not SS.

Sure, we may be recruiting him at WR, but kids switch positions a lot.

If the coaches get in his ear and tell him, you have a better shot to get to the NFL as a SS, and you will be the next EB, then he would go.

Remember Brent Vinson? He was our Percy Harvin, a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands who was going to be a stud WR. Where did he end up?

I don't care where he plays, as long as he's playing for UT.

It's hard to be a dynamic WR when you can't catch the ball.

I would have to agree especially since he has had a chance to get back home and think about it. I just wish the young man would go ahead an pull the trigger!

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. I think UT is leading and has lead for awhile, his recent visit just confirms it. I would be more worried about the 4.75 40 time he put up at the USC rising stars camp. He may turn out to be a safety or even a linebacker.

For those of you who actually pay attention to Gator trolls on this board. Cobbs has never been trained to run a 40 with proper technique----starting stance, keeping his head down, and little things like that can shave off a couple tenths.

Cobbs is a legitimate 4.5 - 4.6 guy once he gets a few pointers. His football/game speed is fine, as you can judge by his high school highlights and his combine workouts.

Jerry Rice's 40 times weren't much faster than that.

Implying that Rice couldn't play at the 'AA level now?

If 45 (or however old he is nowadays) Jerry Rice wanted to play for the Vols this season, I'd take him right now, even without offseason conditioning. He was still a pretty good NFL receiver as recently as 2003.

The problem with his highlight films is that they don't show him playing alot of WR. In HS he has been used as a dual-threat QB. Almost like T Pryor at OSU.

2008: Rushed for 1,307 yards and 23 touchdowns. Threw for 1,108 yards and six more scores while playing quarterback. 236 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Intercepted two passes. Returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns

Now I really could care less about his 40 time if he is going to be a WR. That is nice for a tall avg framed WR because they need the speed to breakaway and avoid tackles. For Cobbs even if a 4.7 is his true speed he runs with the ball like a RB. His highlight films shows his RB skills the way he cuts, hits defenders, and can move. Again 40 times are great for the majority of WRs, but for a player like Cobbs who moves like a RB who cares how fast he is when he gets the ball. Also the main issue at the USC rising star camp was not his 40 time, it was his ability to run routes. Again though he has never been trained as a WR. His learning curve to learn to play WR is his strength. With the right coaches he will learn better then a true WR coming into college.

To many people get caught up on numbers. This kid is a legit threat at whatever position he plays next year in college. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Kiffin to train him as a T Pryor type of player. I could see him lining up as a QB. He is just one of those players with so much potential and raw ability that you just want the ball in his hands. When he has it things happen.

When I watched film on Cobbs I gathered the same opinion as most of you other guys. He's very good but very raw at receiver. He settles a lot on his routes instead of cutting and going. I think after a redshirt year he'll be able to contribute to a team at WR.
