'10 WA QB Jake Heaps

The only concern I see is that he hasn't been under center....that's very teachable though and most people make it a bigger deal than it really is...fact is you want a guy that can throw the ball with intelligence and accuracy. Jake Heaps has both of those abilities.

I've stated this ever since he has been on our radar. I want the kid on campus directing this team, but the whole 2 year mission trip scares me with him.

Wow this kid is a phenom...He look great...He does not line up under center so it is to be seen of his dropback skills but his arm is accurate that is for sure...Would be a big pickup if we can coax him out of state or away from the west side!

Why, oh why does he have to be Mormon!?

In regards to the mission, I do not care.

If he leaves for 1-2 years and he comes back and he's not the best QB on the squad, then he won't play. It's that simple.

Recruits want a leader and they want friends. Jake would give potential signees a great deal of comfort in knowing who they'd be going to battle with.

Whoever signs him is going to have a HUGE summer.

If he commits by May/June, then look out.

He can help recruit a much more elite class to UT, UNC, and UCLA----as opposed to UW & BYU.

Tennessee is going to take 2 quarterbacks in this class, period.

Crompton will leave, Stephens/Coleman could transfer and then we'd have only 1 QB on the team at the end of '09.

If he signs on and gets us a monster class, and then leaves after a redshirt, then we'll still have our monster class. Heaps would help us get O-lineman and the prototypical big WR.

Worry about the mission, when he actually decides he's taking it. Everything I've read suggests he's a long way from making a decision on that.

If we want to land guys like Ambles, Justin Hunter, Woods, and other guys----nationally coveted targets, then we need a big league bomber under center.

Does anybody have a reliable source saying Heaps is going on a mission? I know he's Mormon and that the missions are common tradition, but I haven't heard it from any source.

he's considered not taking one till after his football career is over.

he's considered taking an abbreviated mission of one year.

he's also considered redshirting and taking 2yrs off.

he hasn't made up his mind yet, though, so don't worry about all the people saying he's definitely taking one.

Steve Young never took one and he's Brigham Young's grandson. Jake is ultra-competitive and he may not be able to pull himself away from the game at this stage.

it's too eary to know what he's going to do, though---but to answer the question---No, there's no definitive answer and everything is speculation at this point.

There's no such thing as an abbreviated mission, except for sister (girl) missionaries, for whom it is 18 months.

I mean, technically you could just walk away after a while, but then you didn't serve an "honorable" mission, which would hamper acceptance to any graduate or PhD program at a church school (BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii). In that case it's much, much better to have never gone on a mission.

it was in a Rivals article for Notre Dame last fall I think.

it said if Heaps chose the Irish, he would consider leaving for one year instead of the usual two.

Here are some snaps from under center

YouTube - Jake Heaps - 2004 Highlights

might have been a while ago, but going back to that shouldn't be much of an adjustment at all.

Well, whoever wrote it was wrong, it simply isn't an option.

here it is---

Rivals--- Aug 20, 2008 cPanel®

[And with Heaps likely to take a Mormon mission, albeit a shorter one than the usual two years if he attends Notre Dame, the Irish could put a couple of years between Heaps and Crist as well.]

he had the same QB coach as Erik Ainge. when he goes to Saturday workouts, I'm sure they don't just simulate shotgun snaps. I couldn't imagine his coach not working on his drops and his footwork.

I personally don't think that's a big issue to overcome.

Yeah, whoever wrote that probably misunderstood something they heard or read, no biggie, we don't really expect everything on the internet to be true.

I'll take your word for it then, till I hear otherwise.

If you say it's all or nothing, then my money's on no mission---maybe charity work during or after college/NFL.

I just don't see Jake taking a break with all that would be on his plate.

If he goes, then that speaks volumes about his priorities.

Here's all the stuff I dug up for the old thread going back to 1/24:

It's not a requirement. He doesn't have to take one. It's my understanding many kids don't make up their mind till after they've turned 19.

I've pulled together some different things---

Rivals--- Aug 24, 2008 cPanel®

"I'm still kind of open to the idea, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with that," expressed Heaps. "I could very easily do both, but that's something I need to sit down with parents and talk about, and we'll figure it out from there."

Salt Lake Tribue--- March 24, 2008 blogs.sltrib.com - The Recruiting Trail by Jay Drew & Lya Wodraska

[Heaps, incredibly well-spoken for a sophomore, said he is "probably" going to go on an LDS Church mission and has told all the schools that have talked to him that he could be leaving after his freshman year.

"That's one of the first questions I get asked: ‘Are you going on a mission?'" he said. "Schools want to know. It is totally understandable."]

So...maybe he takes one...maybe he doesn't...maybe he takes an abbreviated trip shorter than the usual two years.

He also wants to enroll in January. Wherever he goes, I would say, that it's still possible he could get on campus and then decide the time's not right to leave.

the more recent the report, the more he seems to be leaning towards no mission.

No such thing as a one year mission - except if you get dismissed and that is not something anyone wants to have happen.

Depending on his age he will have to know very soon weather or not he is going to take a mission. Most likely he would know before he got to campus in January.

From Hubbers:

Heaps said at this point that he is leaning towards not going on a Mormon mission while he is in college, but nothing is completely decided at this point.
