'11 FL LB Gionni Paul

So when they screw up I should have every right to flame them. We pay them to be successful. If they wiff on a LB and don't take Paul than they were unsuccessful.

We pay them? I don't pay them and I'm willing to bet you aren't a significant booster.

If they take Paul and he isn't talented enough or the right guy for the system but rather just occupies a scholarship for 5 years then they were also unsuccessful. You are sold on this guy. The coaches don't seem to be sold.

So no, you don't have a right to "flame them" since you have no way of knowing whether he would have been good or not. You are operating on the assumption that you "know" this kid is a future great SEC LB.

You'll have your opportunity to "flame them" if their failure to find the right players causes them to be unable to rebuild the program.

BTW, UT's LB situation isn't nearly as dire as DT or secondary. This kid IMO is similar skill and talent wise to some LB's already two years into the program like NMT and Nelson except maybe smaller.

Paul could be a nobody. Dawson could be a bust. Johnson could be the next Askew.

I would rather take the risk with a scholarship with Paul and potentially immediately upgrade our LB corps than do nothing and miss out.

Every time you have ever bought a ticket or paid to watch a game on TV you have funneled money into the athletic department, which ultimately pays the coaches. We also pay with hours of our time watching the games and complaining about each other here on message boards.

How do you know we would be upgrading? The staff doesn't think so. Also, how are we missing out? Just wondering.

Our current LB corps for next year is unimpressive. Go back a weeks worth of pages and look around. Plenty of people on here where discussing how great an asset Paul would be to our LB corps. Multiple people said he would even be in the 2-deep. Now that we supposedly have passed on this guy, all these people have either slipped away or started saying how he won't make our LB corps much better.

We could very well get a better LB. I just think we should take him now while we are on top and then sort out our numbers later.

I can gaurantee you that the staff is not going to "do nothing", but is almost inevitable that you miss on somebody. I personally don't think Paul is any better than Harris, but I don't think believing otherwise is without merit. I do believe the staff has been making a concerted effort to upgrade in size, as another poster has already noted we have several smallish outside LBs. They may whiff on whoever it is they really want, but I don't blame them for trying. We can only take so many LBs.

LOL @ compariing Paul to NMT and Nelson. Athletically there is absolutely no comparison. Obviously Auburn, LSU and others see something in Paul that none of them saw IN NMT or Nelson.

It's disappointing, but if the rumors are true about him being only 5'10 or '11 then that's to small to play lb. I can see where the staff is coming from this.

Al Wilson and Eric Westmoreland were 5'11.

Obviously the staff doesn't like him for some reason.

I just hope they aren't as obsessed with big LB's as it seems. We saw what happened against UAB when they put the "big linebackers" out there on the outside.

Tennessee's had a number of starting LBs that size. But Dooley is from the Saban school, so maybe he wants to large up.

You large up if you are running a 3-4 on defense like Saban does. From everything I've seen Tennessee is sticking with the base 4-3. If that is the case you better have extremely fast and athletic OLB's.

With that logic I expect to be consulted on the next coaching hire for UT athletics.

They were both 6'0...not much of a difference I know. He does look small though.

What "Big LBs"? Johnson? If he failed in that game is was because of inexperience, not because of his size.

Paul wanted to be a Vol. He tried to pull the trigger but the safety was on.

I'm all for recruiting an OLB who's bigger/stronger yet can play as well and as fast as Paul. I get it. If we land someone like that I wont even think twice about passing on Paul, but if we dont get our guy, and Paul skates off somewhere in the SEC it will be a pretty bad fail job.

Passing on him has got to mean something big is about to happen

LB is too big of a need in this class to pass him up. I think our numbers our so thin at the position that we should take Paul AND one more backer. People talk about our lack of depth at DT, but I believe LB could be even worse

Tennessee is the only SEC school that has had an in-home with Gionni........take from that what you wish. He may not be much of a priority for Auburn or LSU & UT may not be the only school that passes on him.

Agree completely. I just dont see any OLB's they are in great shape with that have his speed and athleticism...and better size. If people are hanging their hats on Dawson, then they are likely going to end up very disappointed in February.

This. I know you guys in FL think very highly of him and know that he is underrated. I will be pretty upset if we find out that the staff indeed passed on him and we didn't get someone of the same caliber, especially if he ends up somewhere like LSU or the Barn.
