'11 FL LB Gionni Paul

There's no way the staff can look at themselves in the mirror if they back off of him. He likes it here; I can tell he really wants to be here. I don't buy the tall tale that he is only 5'9"; he's fast and smart on the football field.

For a team that has the vertically-challenged Nick Reveiz starting at MLB, I have a hard time believing we'd turn away Paul on the basis of his height. Something doesn't seem right. =\

Trying to look at this from a purely logical standpoint, I have come to a few conclusions.

First, I think we have to acknowledge that there must be at the very least a grain of truth in what Brent said. Hubbs is normally very conservative in what he says about recruits, and unlike a lot of recruiting pundits, he almost never speaks without some factual basis for what he is saying. That is especially true when he talks about things from the staff point of view. So based on what he has said, I tend to believe him -- he has had 2 days to back off of what he said and has not done so.

So what is going on??

1) Size?? I don't think so. After carefully looking at the pictures here and on TOS, Paul appears to be just an inch (at most) shorter than Moore, and his body is thicker. Moore is listed at 6'1", 205 so I would guess Paul to be 5' 11"-6' (note the tops of their heads, not the top of their hairlines) and probably at least 210.

In addition, the coaches have been around Paul in person before this past weekend, yet they have put a lot of work into his recruitment and to get him here for this OV, so putting the two together, I do not buy the size idea at all.

2) I do not think Paul would be so brazen as to tell a bald faced lie saying that the coaches told him how much they wanted him.

3) So I conclude that something may have happened during the visit. Did he flash gang signs, or did problems crop up when discussing grades?? Did he pick his nose at the team dinner?? We could speculate on what the problem was all day, but the fact is that no one knows, at least at the moment.

So after looking at this logically, what happened?? It has to be either one of two things (possibly both). Either we have a significantly more highly desirable recruit nibbling at our bait where we are anticipating a fairly quick resolution (a possible answer because the numbers crunch is real), or something happened during Paul's visit.

I do not know which is the case -- I am inclined to believe we are waiting on answers from one or more prize recruits. Paul is a player that I would surely think is a take, but that is based only on what I know, not on what the staff knows. I hope this one is resolved soon, in Paul's favor.

This staff is not dumb. If the rumors are true than they legitimately feel as if they are better off without him, and I, for one won't question their decision even though I definitely want Paul.

I will. Bad decisions are made all the time by coaches that well, usually turn out to be bad. Did you not question Fulmer? I'm not saying Dooley will be bad, but come on, man. It can definitely be a bad decision.

Liking your coach is good, but you don't have to follow them blindly to be a "true fan."

Don't believe these rumors that the staff might pass on Paul because of an inch or two in height. It's major BS IMO. Just a smokescreen.

Option #3 - when hubbs said its a "silent" night during the visit weekend he meant it, and anything subsequent is all BS to keep people like us running around in circles so the kid have his day to commit on his own terms.

I mean I think Paul is a good player, and his film is impressive, but I don't think he is the kind of talent we can chastise our coach for passing over. While the rumors may not be true, we may have a big surprise in store for us.

That was JB for what it's worth.

#1 OLB on the board. Love the kids film. Incredible speed and quickness something sorely needed in Tennessee's LB corp right now. Kind of odd Tennessee may be cooling while all the other powers in the South are now after him big-time.

Hopefully this one doesn't come back to bite them. I can see this kid being a big-time player at a place like Auburn or LSU. He certainly fits their OLB mold. I'm not sure what Tennessee's OLB mold is anymore after they toyed with moving guys like Austin Johnson/Nick Reviez to OLB for the UAB game. (was this only because of injuries?) That was obviously a disaster from a coverage standpoint.

I can see wanting to get bigger if you run a 3-4 but if they are sticking with the 4-3 they better be fast and athletic on the outside.

I doubt very seriously that this kid did anything too crazy on his visit with his family with him. I still don't believe any of the rumors. I still think this kid will be a Vol.

+1...I think some people have really taken these rumors too far...

Hubbs said he's not sure how high we are on Paul...people took that and made it "our staff doesn't want him anymore"

All tangible evidence points to Paul being a Vol (poet and didn't realize it)

"Louisville and Texas Tech have been stepping up with a lot of interest," Paul said. "LSU and Auburn are up there. Those four really. Tennessee was a real good visit but they are not quite up there right now. We will see what happens over these next months."

- Quote from article.

Since it seems like we're slow playing Paul in effort to make sure we have room for someone better, does that mean said player is a linebacker or just the best available regardless of position?

If we pass on Paul and miss on our big targets...I'm gonna be pissed...
