Would this guy be eligible to start practicing and working out immediately, or is there a waiting period?
From what i gathered i think eligible immediately in January. I asked coaches but nobody has a clear understanding. The 1 thing that is known is that they're supposedly in a similar situation to Penn St. so it's assumed they could play without sitting out, but i think they have to finish the semester to maintain academically eligible.
Man seriously i sent his info to the coaches. Watched some UAB film on youtube and he's as good as what we have to offer now with game experience and time in a division I weight program and 2 yrs left. On the Van issue he's focusing on the state title gm. The thing is he wants to visit again but it's a really stupid issue blocking that from happening. Coaches are still working and were at the Mr. Football banquet on Monday.
Salako was praised for changing his body and getting his big frame more muscled up and in shape. He certainly has the size to be a dominating offensive lineman. But, he hasn't played a snap of college football yet.
"Some of my teammates tell me I have a good punch, so that kind of shocks them a little bit," Salako said. "That helps me out on pass protection.
"I'm quicker on my feet and the way I see the game compared to last year, I see everything slower."
Salako said he's also not nervous - at least not in a bad way - about starting his first game.
"It's an awesome opportunity," Salako said. "I'm really excited for this year. I'm ready to play. I have no anxiety. I'm not nervous at all. I'm ready to play and get some wins this year.
Apparently when he started at UAB as a Frosh he was out of shape like Blair and spent that 1st year trimming down from 330+ to the 315 he is now. That was 2 years ago. Below is a quote when he had been named starter coming out of camp as a RS frosh.
I'd rather have this guy than Richmond. He's seen the speed of the college game- with some SEC exposure- firsthand, and wouldn't need to learn on the job as dramatically as a Freshman. You get him for the spring to learn the offense and Blair shows he can handle the OT position, and all of the sudden things start to fall into place very well on the offensive line.
This kid makes more impact in year one than Drew Richmond, IMHO
I know I come across a little geeked about the dude but I really want us to be good next year and our oline depth is a huge achilles heel to that happening. I don't want anyone to confuse the situation that I think this guy is a 2nd round nfl take. That said imo he is absolutely the closest thing to a sure fire plug and play won't dominate but won't get dominated type of deal we could ever hope for and we'd have him for 2 years while we restock. Coaches may see weaknesses though that I am not capable of assessing but I have watched him and like any good OL he just blends into the background.
as another poster said it's like kismet. I hope we land him.
Absolutely... Mediocrity on the OL is an upgrade from how we performed this year. If he can be one of those players we don't really notice, that's also an upgrade. And our younger guys get more time to develop. If Blair and Mosley add strength to the O line... we could have a decent O line next year. That would be a huge difference maker.
I hope the staff picks Salako up it would make a huge difference. Are there any difference maker Junior College offensive linemen out there UT could sign?
