Offer lists can be deceptive, too. All the un/commitable offers muddy things. And it's still really early in the recruiting cycle, so a lot of kids that are under-recruited for whatever reason haven't made the camp circuit yet.

Offer lists can be deceptive because coaches tend to "group think" just like any other profession. If Saban likes a guy, you can be sure the others will take a long look.

The major point on this or any other offer given by Dooley and staff is that their jobs and careers depend on the choices they make. Thompson has a reputation as a great talent evaluator. If he loses his job because the Vols recruited poorly then his career prospects are hurt. SO..... while I have absolutely no idea whether this kid is the next great UT LB, a role player, or a scout team back up... guys whose futures depend on choosing the right recruits believe in him enough to stake their futures on him.

Good Point.

Every coach's career depends on the level of talent he brings in. Fulmer staked his future on CJ Fleming, it didn't make him a better player or a good take.

Good points....The guy looks pretty good to me in his video, but the coaches have seen him at camp and liked what they saw enough to offer him. My bet is that his stock will rise because our coaches seem to be good at evaluating talent.

Not trying to pick a fight or be a smarta## but who so far would you say were underrated and proved to be good. Propst maybe?

Edit: I understand it may also be too early to tell.

The group think point is spot on. I think it was Urban Meyer that said if Nick Saban offered a defensive prospect, Florida would offer too, especially if they were out of state.

I don't see how anyone can say Probst has exceeded expectations at this point in his career. He saw a little PT as a freshman on a team that went 6-7 at a unit that was honestly the worst on the entire roster. Because of those factors its hard for me to say he or anyone really played above a 3-star (which he was) type of level.

Under the current circumstances getting playing time at Tennessee should not equate to a player automatically being labelled as a good player or as someone who was underated coming out of high school simply for the fact that the talent level is way down and the win totals are way down.

Now if the guy becomes a 2-3 year starter on 9-10 win teams, then yes, he would have definitely exceeded expectations coming out of high school.

Well stated. I have to agree. I guess in another year or two we'll see just how good our coaches are at evaluating talent.

I coach. I enjoy watching and breaking down film. Didn't realize that makes me such a dweeb. I never said the kid couldn't play. He has a good football base. He's about average in size. He may look like a stud athlete @ camps, but he doesn't back up that athleticism on film. He very well may be a combine superstar. His technique is lacking and he plays VERY vertical. Very few of his tackles showed good form...lots of helmet hugging. Montrell made a good point about his footwork as well. These are easier fixes than most. He has great instincts and that is undeniable. If his SR film shows improvement then you can bet the offers will roll in. Again, I never said the kid couldn't play and didn't realize that commenting on the film that was linked would bring out the elitist jerks. If you think its funny, mayja, then laugh...no need to show your a**.

Only speaking for myself but this part is the part that always makes me hesitate when I read. You say you coach so you may no exactly what to look for when "breaking down film" but I seriously doubt most of us on here fall into that same category. If I watch film, I find myself saying things like "wow, seems fast" or "wow, throws the ball a long way" which is why I hardly ever look at all these highlights videos in this forum.

I think that makes me more the rule around here, rather than the exception. You might be the exception, or maybe I'm just naive to amount of qualified talent evaluators we have around here, but when I read about someone breaking down the film I usually dismiss them as unqualified. Probably not the most fair way to go about it but, oh well.

I see Tn signing a kid that the AJC says could be Atlanta's best kept secret and has been invited to camp by several SEC and ACC schools for evaluation. I also see a kid that told Dooley he was All Vol and not to worry about his commitment while he's camping. Those things make me verry happy that he's decided to be a Vol. He'll most likely become a 3 star sometime during his Senior season IMO.

No man...you're exactly right. I didn't try to push my opinion on anyway. I miss a lot on film that more experienced coaches catch. Heck, Montrell noticed his footwork and pointed that out. The first thing I noticed was that he finds the football and that will trump a good form tackled Everytime. I just enjoy watching and evaluating what I see. You don't have to see it the same way. We can all share opinions or point out nuances and some might learn or even disagree. It's no issue either way for me. I just appreciate common decency and only bantered with the poster who seemed to be offended by those of us who enjoy more of the game than just rooting on UT.

I think he's a good pickup. If he's excelling at camps now and that was his junior film then he's made *some* strides and must have improved his game some. Not saying his film looked bad.... you can tell he has great instincts and speed. With some college conditioning I really think he could be a great LB for us.

I posted this in the other thread so some might have to read it twice :hi:

I talked to this kid at camp, he was VFL before getting an offer, that is why he committed as soon as the offer came in. He has not gone to many Jr. days and I was told he is not known because of that. I do not know how he will pan out but he looked quick and had good technique. The kid has a good frame and will put on some weight when he gets here.

He was called up several time to go against some of the TE and RB they were looking at during camp. He looked good in camp and it was nice to see him helping younger kids by coaching them up on the sidelines.
