Imani Cross never intended to decommit from Tennessee.

But to his disappointment, that was the case for the running back from North Hall High School in Gainesville, Ga.

As Cross tells it, the Vols seemed to turn their back on their first commitment of the 2012 class.

“I definitely had high hopes on Tennessee,” he said. “I was a little disappointed but at the same time I realize when one door closes, another one opens. I’m just moving along.”

UT appeared to force that move when its interest in Cross slowed and the Vols began to recruit other running backs. Cross believed UT’s coaches didn’t try to contact him as much as before.

Cross said he recently called UT defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Terry Joseph to check in.

“When I did call him they told me there were other backs they were looking at and at the same time they were interviewing other running backs coaches and I would have to be reevaluated,” Cross said.

So Cross decided to reevaluate his own options. He said Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Virginia have recruited him the hardest since he committed to UT in February. Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Purdue have also offered scholarships.

Cross, who’s ranked the No. 19 running back in the nation by ESPN.com, said he has yet to schedule any trips. NCAA rules allow him to take up to five official visits.

Thanks for the quotes.

Best of luck to him. We are chasing the best we can get, and hope we can get better. I hope he does well for himself.

its reported on Mr.SEC that Cross has decommited.feel that Ten. has given up on him.was told new RB coach would have to revaluate him.:ermm:

mike davis opened up his recruitment and visited last weekend, lets hope we're gaining traction with a top quality back. anyone got some insight on that or is that just wishful thanking?

I really hope the staff knows what they are doing on this one, I really thought Cross be could the type of back we needed w/ our abysmal run game.

I also think its f'd up what the staff did to him, JMO. I know recruiting is a cut throat thing & you need the best players but.

No doubt I liked Cross and would hate to see him come back to bit us in the arse if he plays for another SEC team.

(Gonna keep the sarcasm down.... must... try...)

OP, thanks for sharing the info, but many knew about this development on Sunday evening. Imani has his own thread in the Recruiting Forum and you can keep up with all of our commitments and many recruits there. His thread has some additional quotes and member speculation.

All the best! :hi:

Cross has been a candidate to go elsewhere for some time. Suspect UT has other needs or better prospects leaning their way.

hope we land a stud in his place.

i look at this as i would in choosing a prom date. do you go with your high school sweetheart or do you dump her to take a really hot chick...(better hope that chick says yes, and if not, then you might be stuck with someone ugly cause you know the high school sweetheart wont take you back.)

pretty dirty of UT... wish this kid goes to Vandy and becomes all world.

good grief it's not dirty at all. Everyone claims to want UT to get better but when they release a kid 2 months before signing day because they are in on some better prospects all of a sudden people get a conscience. It's part of recruiting, deal with it

Sounds like the kid is handling it better than some posters here. Makes me like him more and wish he where a VOL but we only have so many spots and we really need to win next year.

Best of luck to Imani. I'm confident that the coaches know what they're doing.

Is there a nice or "clean" way to tell a kid we don't want you? IMO, UT did the right thing told him up front and now he has time to take his OVs and pick a school. It would have been dirty if we told him 2 week before NSD and he had to rush ho pick a school.
