Generally it is a decent indicator of where a kid stands. When I see a kid with good SEC/Big 10/Big 12 offers I feel better about them.
I will be honest enough to say that the two RB commits concern me. I know the staff jumped on those guys early and would not have taken the commits unless they thought very highly of them.... but I am still scratching my head.

The way I see it, they aren't coming in as freshman and having to be THE guy right away. They're big, well built kids who will be bruisers, especially once they get on our training system.
Yep. Still don't know how much Devrin will ever help in our offense but he has definitely earned his scholly this year with special teams play.
Size and speed. Too big and too slow. Most guys grow into themselves in college. If anythiing, Cross will have to slim down a little based on what has been said here.
Forty times are notoriously generous unless they are laser timed at a camp or some other event with integrity. I think both of these guys are listed at 4.6 which means they're probably slower than that... which means they are slower than many if not most SEC LB's and some DE's.
At best, these guys look like projects. UT needs RB help right now and, for all the grief the guy takes here, will really be hurting without Poole.
Smith looks 2 years away to me. Lane is just one guy.
Maybe UT takes another RB who can help immediately while these guys develop?
Just concerned... not throwing stones.
I'll give you that Hill looks a little slow relative to his competition. Cross, on the other hand, looks very quick against top notch competition in Ga. And besides, for a guy that is always singing the praises of TP, you should know that top end speed isn't the end all for a good running back. TP has been pretty good with less than break away speed. I think more than being fast, making the first man miss or breaking the first tackle is paramount for a good RB.
A lot of times rivals doesn't update the offer list...he could have gotta more offers had he not been solid to the vols early this season.
Everyone forgets that Hill was evaluated in person by the coaches at the camp this summer. After camping he got his offer. He reportedly ran a 4.5 in front of the coaches. He may be a fullback, but IMO I don't think he's slow.
