'12 OH RB Alden Hill (UT Commit 7/19)

Generally it is a decent indicator of where a kid stands. When I see a kid with good SEC/Big 10/Big 12 offers I feel better about them.

Offer list still isn't a good indicator though,

some kids don't camp as much as others
The kid may not fit the system
The kid could be a bad camper

There are alot of variables, if we have seen anything from our staff, they seem pretty good at spotting diamonds in the rough

I will be honest enough to say that the two RB commits concern me. I know the staff jumped on those guys early and would not have taken the commits unless they thought very highly of them.... but I am still scratching my head.

I can definitely understand the doubt in Hill, but Cross has been a monster this year. What is your concern about them?

The way I see it, they aren't coming in as freshman and having to be THE guy right away. They're big, well built kids who will be bruisers, especially once they get on our training system.

Size and speed. Too big and too slow. Most guys grow into themselves in college. If anythiing, Cross will have to slim down a little based on what has been said here.

Forty times are notoriously generous unless they are laser timed at a camp or some other event with integrity. I think both of these guys are listed at 4.6 which means they're probably slower than that... which means they are slower than many if not most SEC LB's and some DE's.

At best, these guys look like projects. UT needs RB help right now and, for all the grief the guy takes here, will really be hurting without Poole.

Smith looks 2 years away to me. Lane is just one guy.

Maybe UT takes another RB who can help immediately while these guys develop?

Just concerned... not throwing stones.

A lot of times rivals doesn't update the offer list...he could have gotta more offers had he not been solid to the vols early this season.

That's part of my concern. UT really does need someone who can come in and be THE guy. Lane hasn't proven he can do it. Smith looks 2 years away from being effective to me. Who else is there?

Progress by the O Line will work wonders for Lane not being able to 'prove it' yet

Hill or Cross...One is gonna play as a true freshman. Someone has to be the short yardage power back. Getting a back that breaks the first tackle will be an upgrade.

Tom Smith is a added depth. The game changer back will be next years class.

Yep. Still don't know how much Devrin will ever help in our offense but he has definitely earned his scholly this year with special teams play.

He'll continue to. And he is a guy who can always take a bubble screen or simple slant to the house.

EDIT: But, I see what you mean... I don't know if he will ever find himself in a starting role on the offense.

Weapons are still weapons.

I'll give you that Hill looks a little slow relative to his competition. Cross, on the other hand, looks very quick against top notch competition in Ga. And besides, for a guy that is always singing the praises of TP, you should know that top end speed isn't the end all for a good running back. TP has been pretty good with less than break away speed. I think more than being fast, making the first man miss or breaking the first tackle is paramount for a good RB.

Agree here. It's about getting all of the yards, and more, available.
If there are 3 available, get me 5. If it is 4th and 1, get me 2.

The yards and big runs will come in rhythm, as will first downs.

I was down on the whole Grice thing, but something inside me told me not to worry. Just as a refresher, this was already posted by somebody a while back:

And more of him being run down from behind and going down on the first tackle:

I was getting mad at all the people who kept on saying "he's gonna be a fullback! he's gonna be a fullback!" After a while and the excitement wore off, I forgot why I got so mad at that. Then I found the second video. Anybody can clue me in to what the competition is like where he's playing?

Pretty sure Cross has gotten a lot more attention from SEC/ACC schools. But once we weathered the storm of him thinking about looking around, they have not been as active pursuing him.

I like Cross a lot. I think he will be just as good as Mathers. I still think Hill will be a FB, but more of an offensive FB. Throw it to him out of the backfield or the occasional dive. Whole other weapon to our offense.

Everyone forgets that Hill was evaluated in person by the coaches at the camp this summer. After camping he got his offer. He reportedly ran a 4.5 in front of the coaches. He may be a fullback, but IMO I don't think he's slow.

Cross actually looks like the guy more likely to end up a FB at this point, having said that I think Hill and Cross will be RBs here.

He isn't going to be a FB, Cross would be one before Hill IMO. Hill is 6'0 225 & runs a 4.5, he will be a powerful RB w/ enough speed to take one to the house. At first I didn't like this pick up but I really like it now.

No, you are correct. 4.5 is not slow especially for 220 lbs. I don't know what it is about his film, but he just looks slightly sluggish. Maybe the film speed is screwed up or maybe he doesn't need to run full speed against his competition. I'll trust the coaches.

I don't know how Cross or Hill will develop. Might grow more after HS or they may add or shed weight. Who knows. I think certainly one of the two end up at FB though. They need one this cycle b/c I can't tell you who is behind Fugate at this point....
