Not starting issues but just asking a question.
Is Hill possibly a commit that we let loose in case of hamilton or another unforeseeable player comes up?
Just going off of his poor competition in high school, and sub-par offers id say so. I like the idea of getting heavier backs but we already had Hill.

Maybe. They may try and grayshirt him if that were to happen (although I doubt they get everyone to finish out this class people are predicting). I still think he ends up at Fullback in college. Having seen him a number of times up here I just dont think he has the speed or athleticism to play tailback in the SEC.
I think if this staff was truly sold on both Hill and Cross being good players at this level they wouldn't still be scrambling among C-listers and D-listers for another tailback in this class.
Have you seen the "C-" and "D-"listers they are going after? Burners. What are Hill and Cross? Hammers. Pender's the only [pipe-dream] combination of speed and power that's even being brought up here. If it wasn't for a love-spat with the Clemson staff we'd be in the same place we are now, only without Marlin Lane.
Something else telling about FB at Tennessee is from the DD Show. He said that they activated Fugate for the Vandy game for special teams. I didn't realize this before, but that means we've been playing games with only one FB. I just don't think FB is enough of a priority to take a guy's commitment.
You could be right, and they can't make it in Div 1. But I don't know how a RB who can't block turns into a FB who can.
Anyone know the 'rest of the story' with Fugate this year? He was supposed to be a hammer for us, but has been a complete no show. I know there were weight issues, but has there been something else?
Dooley threw out the "he was outperformed in practice" line. I would bet that there's another reason.
Bartholomew is easily the better blocker. Fugate missed a couple of blocks in the Montana game. Fugate was put on special teams and won the special team player of the week this week based on his practicing. I dont think Fugate is in the doghouse or anything.

It's happened before. Shawn Bryson and Troy Fleming certainly come to mind. Both were high school tailbacks who probably never blocked a day in their lives before college and both turned out to be great fullbacks. Bryson probably the best Tennessee has ever had.
I'm just projecting him at fullback because of his size and lack of speed and athleticism for an SEC tailback. I think he could be a very good fullback. He has a physical nature to him and the size needed. I think it will turn out being the best fit for him playing in the SEC.

- Govols247“They want me to be a power running back,” he said. “That was one of the big things they told me — they wanted to find big guys, and they’ve had a hard time recruiting big guys who had speed — and they were impressed that I ran a 4.6(-second 40-yard dash) as a senior and at my weight, at 220. So they know I ran a 4.6 on turf, electric-timed — that’s a 4.5 handheld — and they’re ready for me to be a running back.
“They said it will be a great opportunity for me, and I’ll have an opportunity to play early because we don’t have many running backs on the depth chart. So when I get down there, I’ll get a chance to play freshman year.
“I’ll be competing for a starting position and really need to adjust well if I want to make it on the field for the first game, to start off, and take care of my role.”
