It'll be interesting to see if he's gonna be ineligible this year b/c of this grades deal. If so, it'll be disappointing but won't break us imo.
In 2011, our state legislature passed some very severe laws concerning athlete agents as a direct response to what most of us assume happened with Cam Newton. If any money passed hands, this now resigned teacher is going to sing like a canary or face prison and probably the loss of his pension same goes for Jovon's momma since our new law also requires parents to register as althete agents if they get a benefit and failure to do so is a felony.
This is the specific law that could apply to the guidance counselor IF he got $ to do this that can be traced to AU:
49-7-2143. Disclosure requirements.
(a) Any person who, in this state, knowingly influences, or attempts to influence, any student athlete to accept an athletic scholarship that is offered by a higher education institution from which such person receives any compensation or any other thing of value shall provide a written disclosure of such person's relationship with the higher education institution to the student athlete concurrently with initially making such influence or attempt to influence. Any person who is required to disclose a relationship with a higher education institution to a student athlete pursuant to this subsection (a) shall also provide, within forty-eight (48) hours of providing the written disclosure to the student athlete, a written disclosure of such relationship to the student athlete's parent or legal guardian, the secretary of state, and to the athletic director, president and the general counsel of the higher education institution from which such person has influenced or attempted to influence the student athlete to accept an athletic scholarship.
(b) This section shall not apply to any person who is an employee of the higher education institution for which such person influences or attempts to influence a student athlete to accept an athletic scholarship.
(c) Failure to provide a written disclosure as required by subsection (a) is a Class E felony punishable by a fine of no more than twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) or confinement for no less than one (1) year nor more than six (6) years, or both.
(d) In addition to the criminal penalty provided in subsection (c), the secretary of state may assess a civil penalty pursuant to § 49-7-2138. Any hearing on the imposition of any fine pursuant to this section shall be in accordance with the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act, compiled in title 4, chapter 5.
HISTORY: Acts 2011, ch. 424, § 11.
I hate to defend AU but some of what his mother has been saying might be the truth about where the money came from.
Jeffery Robinson an gravedigger was shot and killed in a botch drug raid in Memphis. They actually shot him at the cemetary where he worked and lived. So yes as some have said he died on the job. This took place in 2002 and lawsuit was filed against the city.
US TN: Drug Raid May Cost Memphis Taxpayers
404-Error p=7
In 2005 the city paid out and settled the estate of Jeffery Robinson. Tina Tabor Wordlow(Jovon's mother) received over 350k from the court, which she may have had to put some in an account for Jovon for later. Jovon is also mentioned in the court document but using his mother's maiden name Tabor. His real father amd mother were never married. Assuming at some point he took his real father's name. Him being named in the court case as a defendant means he was also awarded and probably as a minor money was reuired to be put in a trust until he reached a certian age.

That doesn't really help with the grade fixing.I hate to defend AU but some of what his mother has been saying might be the truth about where the money came from.

The weird thing is that AU apparently pulled him off the practice field as soon as they heard the NCAA was at his HS. I'd suspect most programs would wait for some sort of official communication from the NCAA before doing this, unless they knew the grades were cooked.Agreed but this all started with him riding in a new car and blowing money around town. The mother said it came from money won in a court case from the father's death. That part may be correct.

This whole situation is peculiar. I've heard 3 different stories where the money came from, and 5 or 6 widely varying amounts the mother was awarded/inherited. And the article linked above by TW states:
"And now, Memphis city attorneys are negotiating with attorneys for Robinson's son, Jarvis Robinson, to settle a lawsuit against the city. More than $1 million is at stake."
Maybe someone can clear up the inconsistencies here:
1. Is Jarvis Robinson an another name for Jovon? If so why would a 10 year old boy have attorney's? Why wouldn't they be described as his mother's attorney's?
2. Why isn't his mother's name mentioned anywhere in that article, if she was awarded moneys.
The second, shelby county link posted doesn't work, so maybe that would have cleared up the confusion. Sad story all the way around.
