'13 TN SG Markel Crawford

Total shocker. I'll take him though. I expect this to open the flood gates for the Tigers over the next few weeks.

Funny how things change, I remember your stance on him about 6 months ago.

MC,how many is Memphis taking in 2013? This say anything about J. Johnson's recruitment?

Definitely a surprise though, first recruit of 2013 Tennessee has had its eyes on that they've lost.

Maybe they cooled after the injury because it was Florida and UT, so something changed.

I remember my stance on him 5 minutes ago: he ain't coming to Memphis.

I was wrong, and I bet this means I'll be wrong about my prediction that Pastner gets a majority of this class from outside the county.

Markel is a solid top 100 player, but Jujuan Johnson is the better pickup at the 2 spot. I stand by that. Of King, JW3, Nichols, Hubbs, Johnson and Crawford, Crawford is the least impactful right off the bat. He's still got the size, skills and shooting stroke to be an NBA guard one day though.

I have to wonder what this means for J. Johnson.

That was my first thougt is j Johnson??? Don't see them going to the same school, but never saw Crawford at memphis either, odd.

Also, Memphis will sign 5-6 in 2013.

Apparently someone on MT.org is fan of our banter, BTO.

Sarcasm I assume?

Edit: just saw it. Either KuoState, or a lurker who doesn't have the grapes to post here. Funny either way, didn't realize I was such a celeb.

Just someone who obviously visits both boards.

Oh well. In any regard, he's a good pickup, I've always been excited about him, IMO better than Johnson and potentially better than jw3. As you said maybe not initially but maybe after a year, great motor, hope he recovers fully.

Apparently he was on an unofficial today?

According to Memphis roar...

Biggest thing that swayed him was loyalty after the injury...

I'm guessing Tennessee and UF cooled and maybe told him they'd reevaluate when he returned. Meanwhile Memphis stayed on him and kept pushing for a committment. Kind of what I figured happened when I saw the news.

"mucho take it easy"... I rarely ever post on MT.org. As for Crawford i think he committed to Memphis only because of his injury and fear that other schools would rescind their offer. Honestly i didn't want him on the Tiger's squad, he really wasn't a need IMO. King and Johnson were the main local targets, and the Tigers really need to add some size. The Crawford signing might hurt Memphis in regards to being able to sign much needed post players.

Jmo but I think it'll have a bigger impact on Johnson than post guys. I don't think memphis gets both Johnson and Crawford, I thought it'd be Johnson, but with this committ I think Johnson may be headed elsewhere. Once again jmo, I don't follow Memphis that much so maybe they get both.

With Crawford's injury, and the # of players UM can sign... I honestly want it to impact Jajuan's decision, but I don't think it will. It wouldn't surprise me if he feels slighted by UT or UF after UM stuck by him if he doesn't turn out recruiting some of these guys himself. This could be huge for UM and potentially bad for us.

Deep down I hope that it is some covert, black ops style recruiting from CCM. Commit to UM so Jajuan will look elsewhere, and once Jajuan commits, flip to UT! Hahaha

Yea it doesn't give me a great feeling either, but I'm trusting CCM. Crawford and Nichols are buddies and Nichols kept tweeting congrats to him on being a tiger. Not saying Nichols goes there, but it doesn't hurt their chances with Nichols now that they have Crawford.

Yea Crawford is already on Nichols, along with all the menphis fans right now. Guess were about to find out just how interested Nichols is in Memphis.

Crawford wanted to stay home all along. Memphis was late to offer for a variety of reasons too complicated to go into here, but but once Pastner turned up the heat it was over. It was starting to go that direction in early July, and the injury accelerated it.

And you can bet the fact that Pastner stuck by a kid in his situation will pay dividends with other locals and their parents.

But I doubt the Memphis class will contain more than 3 of the local kids.

Recent change of opinion or have you always felt this way?

Well as you said the signing of Crawford doesn't help us on Nichols at all as they are really good friends and I agree. CCM putting all his eggs in the Memphis recruiting pool has really bothered me. Kids do not leave there to come to UT. They grow up as Memphis fans and hating UT. We've seen many coaches try to pull kids out of that city. Thinking that CCM is going to create a pipeline from there is a pipe dream IMO. I will just have to see it happen first. I know we got Stokes, but seriously things could have been a lot different if Memphis or KY had an open scholly. We will never know. I think the stradegy that the kids have from there is that if they are pretty good (4 star) talent and want to go to Memphis, then all they have to do is have UT as one of their favorites. If Memphis needs them or not, they will get recruited hard. What prospect have we ever went after that UM didn't make a priority to get? Hell, they didn't even have a scholly for Stokes and came after him hard. I just think it's too much pressure on a kid from there to say no to UM and come to the hated school UT.

This is NO surprise especially after the injury...this is the only choice for him to make with the injury...very wise...his recovery and rehab will all take place on his front doorstep....literally...several of these kids live within walking distance of the UM campus...literally again....anybody with half a brain would have advised this same decision...wish him well....injuries during your senior year of high school have a HUGE effect on your decision as far as which school to attend...really not that big of news...

Well I disagree....I'm close friends with Adonis Thomas' uncle and he told me the A.T. LOVED UT but when Pearl left the decision was made much easier for him.....just not enough time left to get back in with him...Hating UT??? that is a myth...

Well the good news is Memphis can't possibly take all these kids so some of them are going to go elsewhere out of default. Maybe if we get 1 or 2 this year, along with west Tennessee boy Hubbs, and Memphis product Stokes sticks around it will help change the perception.

I don't buy it being a lost cause and think if CCM pulls it off he has set up the program very nicely. Crawford wasn't a must get, or even considered by some on their wish list, those guys all still remain. If we miss on Hubbs and Nichols, and to a lesser extent jw3 & king, then I will begin to worry that there's no hope in Memphis.

I feel if anybody can create a constant flow, its CCM.
