'13 TN SG Markel Crawford

Well the good news is Memphis can't possibly take all these kids so some of them are going to go elsewhere out of default. Maybe if we get 1 or 2 this year, along with west Tennessee boy Hubbs, and Memphis product Stokes sticks around it will help change the perception.

I don't buy it being a lost cause and think if CCM pulls it off he has set up the program very nicely. Crawford wasn't a must get, or even considered by some on their wish list, those guys all still remain. If we miss on Hubbs and Nichols, and to a lesser extent jw3 & king, then I will begin to worry that there's no hope in Memphis.

I feel if anybody can create a constant flow, its CCM.

No, Crawford was no big loss ... if we land some other good talent. We may wish we had him if we miss on some of the big fish from there.

Maybe CCM will be able to reel some of the Memphis fish in. It remains to be seen. You said if anybody can then it's CCM? Not so sure about that. He still has work to do to. He's not really proved how well of a recruiter he is. He's in on a lot, but not closed the book on any.

Pearl recruited that area as hard as anyone possibly could. He consistently beat UM and then rubbed their face in it. He publically said that recruiting Memphis was a top priority. We all know the results. It's just hard to pull kids away from there to come to UT.

Well I disagree....I'm close friends with Adonis Thomas' uncle and he told me the A.T. LOVED UT but when Pearl left the decision was made much easier for him.....just not enough time left to get back in with him...Hating UT??? that is a myth...

There were a lot of kids from Memphis that LOVED UT during the Pearl era. Really didn't change the end results though.

Crawford wanted to stay home all along. Memphis was late to offer for a variety of reasons too complicated to go into here, but but once Pastner turned up the heat it was over. It was starting to go that direction in early July, and the injury accelerated it.

And you can bet the fact that Pastner stuck by a kid in his situation will pay dividends with other locals and their parents.

But I doubt the Memphis class will contain more than 3 of the local kids.

I think three would be the minimum.

Crawford stated in his post-commitment interview that he expects more local guys to commit to Memphis in the coming weeks.

Nick King announced that the three TN schools have moved above Texas in his recruitment, which means he's staying relatively close to home no matter where he goes. Sources like MemphisRoar seem to think he'll announce his commitment to Memphis very soon, possibily on his unofficial visit on Monday.

Then there is Jujuan Johnson and Nichols. I bet we get one, and there is an outside shot at both.

Then there is JW3. Who knows what he's thinking now.

The best shots we have at recruits outside of the area are Pookie Powell (FL G), Dwight Coleby (F), Djitte (NC C) and Nunn (IL G).

Adonis commited to Memphis while Pearl was still at UT.

In all fairness, he committed during the termoil. He really didn't have a choice. UT couldn't have been an option for him.

But...he still didn't land the committment before the turmoil started.

The perception of pearl is much different than that of CCM. Many HS and youth coaches have expressed their good feelings about Martin, something they didn't for Pearl.

Hate to be so blunt, but the fact he is a black man, who lived in the ghetto and played in the NBA goes a long way with these Memphis kids. No matter how much Pearl won those are attributes he simply couldn't match.

Fair enough. Pearl's TV announcement was in September, Adonis committed in late october of 2010. I still assumed that Pearl would be UT's coach at that point in 2010 though.

So when Tennessee was looking real good with these recruits you were making some huge argument about how pastner is letting city kids go, and it's the new way he's recruiting. Now you're talking a minimum of 3 and likely 4 or 5 Memphis kids.

So which is it?

Also, where'd you hear about the Tennessee schools moving up, would like to read that.

I always assumed we'd get at least three.

King
Johnson
JW3

My guess, considering all the unofficial visits for local kids lately and things that I'm hearing with our high-profile out of area recruits, is that Josh doesn't think our chances with guys like Keith Frazier (porbably going TAMU or Zona) and Tyler Ennis (about to commit to CUSE) are so hot. So he turned up the heat on the local guys.

But Markel Crawford was one that nobody really saw coming, and it's because Josh stuck to his guns on Crawford's scholarship offer while other schools didn't. Getting Crawford ultimately means we have a much better shot at Nichols now.

Crawford's commitment may have changed the game.

read it on twitter last night after consuming a few brews, but I'm fairly certain it was Jason Smith's twitter feed. If not his, John Martin's.

Makes sense.

If Crawford committment leads to Nichols committment then CCM dropped the ball big time. If Crawford had that big of an impact on Nichols we should have been pushing hard for Crawford, he was ours if we wanted him.

CCM has to have a feel, so I'm guessing while they're friends, it wont have that big of an impact. If Nichols winds up at Memphis I don't think it's because of Crawford.

Remember, his very good friend and teammate hubbs may be a vol. His good friend stokes is already a vol.

I think UT is still the favorite for Nichols. This may have moved Memphis up to second for the kid though.

And UT will get Hubbs.

I really don't have a clue anymore, the Crawford commit really shocked me. I still would take UT as the leader for both, but the Crawford committ changes things up.

These kids can relate to the black man from the ghetto, but most are signing with the short white man that has proved to stick many of their friends in the NBA.

Not sure how anyone can feel too confident about Hubbs or Nichols until Krzyzewski gets back from the Olympics and focuses on recruiting full-time.

K doesn't lose many battles when he goes hard after a kid.

Because he happens to coach Memphis. You could stick a woman's softball coach as their head coach and shed still pull Memphis recruits.

If you're suggesting he hasn't been going hard on these kids then you haven't followed their recruitment very closely.

I'm suggesting that K hasn't been fully focused on recruiting for the last two months. He's also about to win a Gold medal, and when he comes back and turns up the heat on who exactly he wants, he's hard to beat. This is a fact of history.

You're right, and suggesting hubbs and Nichols are priority 1&2 for K is completely false.

Not only the Memphis coach. There are other short white men with pretty good records of sending the boys to the next level. Ask Poythress or Elliot Williams. It will be hard for an unproven coach to beat out Memphis and/or Coach K. If CCM does, then we will finally put the nail in the coffin about his longivity at UT.

Agreed he needs to close the door on the recruitment of these guys, thought you were only referring to pastner.

Not sure he can. Some of the guys he's going up against are legends. No fault to CCM, just hard to almost impossible to beat out some of these guys. If they want a player, they will get them.

Very frustrating.

So in your prediction we miss on hubbs, king, jw3, Johnson and Nichols?

Troubles were already rolling massively...TRUST ME....the NCAA cloud GREATLY affected his recruitment...He told me directly "UT has no coach"....That's what the NCAA does that hurts your program more than anything...Cane you may not remember but UT went for almost 18 months with this stuff hanging over us...THAT IS WHY A.T. stopped looking at UT along with the big man you guys signed out of Georgia....So, NO you're wrong....it was even worst....CBP was still there with the huge cloud hanging around....

Well, technically, I'm right, but I understand what you mean. I was living in Kville at the time (and still am) and I remember the turmoil clearly. The cloud pretty much tanked the end of that 2010-2011 season for you guys, even though Pearl had his most talented squad since he began at UT.

I remember I was driving to Gatlinburg on the day that Ut played Michigan in the first round NCAA game (Memphis played Zona directly after). We arrived at Smoky Mountain Brewery just in time for the Memphis game to start, and that was the first time I heard the final score of the UT-Michigan game. I remeber thinking "man, they just laid down." All the Pearlgate stuff started taking its toll and by the time the NCAAs rolled around, the guys didn't even seem like they wanted to play anymore.
