'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Lambert's situation is completely different. Bryant hasn't seen many schools because of fear over his grades. Lambert visited and looked at other schools prior to his commitment.

His ability to get in still isn't 100% confirmed at this point, and he needs to make sure he has a back-up plan. What is wrong with that? It's his future. A fan's perspective is obviously much different.

Agee 110%. Spot on post...

LOL

Miiami is harder to get into that UT for athletes as far as test scores go (maybe some other requirements too, like foreign language). Tennessee and other SEC schools have some sort of online class restriction (can't remember what), that Miami doesn't always have. That's why Beau Sandland dropped SEC schools from his choices last year.
Tennessee is only 1 of 7 Universities that does NOT allow special admissions for students who do not meet minimum academic criteria. Iirc

I know where you are going with that but I don't buy that all athletes go into the same applicant pool as other students.

It's no doubt harder to get into to tennessee as an athletes than most places(yes even vandy), but athletes aren't treated exactly the same as other students regarding admissions

A regular student with a 2.5gpa and a 19 isn't getting in but I damn sure bet a football player is.

It's just those bare bones minimum qualifiers that are getting into tenn IMO

Not much to see in South Beach in late December.

Have you been? I've been to the beach in south FL in late December.(not South Beach in particular, but a beach) There was plenty to see IMO.

Thanks for that, I knew there was something I had read along these lines.

And lets not act as if UT is taking kids with ACT scores of 12 & below.. Miami is a good school with strict academic standards for admission, but lets not act like they don't make exceptions for athletes.

Yep, been there several times. But you're not likely to see anything in South Beach this time of the year that's all that big a deal, IMO. I guess the night life is pretty cool but limited for minors (unless UM is still taking recruits bar hopping). Lincoln road is neat, I guess.

The biggest deal about South Beach for these kids is the actual beach scene, which ain't all that in December. My point was simply that a committed recruit would be foolish to risk the relationships he's built with his current team just for a quick glance at South Beach. IOW, Bryant likely has real interest in UM, and this trip is more than just site seeing. JMO.

Let them flip one of ours the BUTCHER might go down there and flop 2 of theres.:)

I think they listed Air Force, UVA, Texas, UConn

That's all I can remember

Thanks. Most of those make sense from the school reputation perspective.

Texas and Tennessee don't fit with the others IMO.

Did it say how long Tennessee has been following this policy? Would be really interesting to compare this policy's lifespan at UT to our current slump.

I would be careful making what seem like assumptions concerning academics at The University of Texas - Austin. It is a top institution, one of the best Public options in the country.

I love, and am proud of, my alma mater. But The University of Tennessee - Knoxville is not in the same academic company as Texas.

Overall School Ranking (US News)
Texas - #52
Tenn - #101

Business School Ranking (US News)
Texas - #17
Tenn - #67

Still, to be listed with institutions such as:
The University of Virginia
The University of Texas
The University of Connecticut
The Air Force Academy

It's nice to see. Not sure what it's doing to help the football team though.

Cool your jets. I never compared Tennessee to Texas academically. I don't care about the other UT to be honest.

Also from the article found this tidbit interesting:

Texas was one of seven schools that reported no use of special admissions, instead describing "holistic" standards that consider each applicant individually rather than relying on minimum test scores and grade-point averages.

But the school also acknowledged in its NCAA report that athletic recruits overall are less prepared. At Texas, the average SAT score for a freshman football player from 2003 to 2005 was 945 -- or 320 points lower than the typical first-year student's score on the entrance exam.

School officials did not make coach Mack Brown or athletic director DeLoss Dodds available to comment.

Not sure why you are telling me to "cool my jets". My reply was not combative in the least..

You however seem to now be agitated. Not sure why.

Was just responding to your statement that Texas and Tennessee didn't fit with the others.

You don't have to care about the other UT, I don't care about the other UT really, but they are a really good school

Maybe I am old school about this - but why would UT want to be and go through all they are going through to be something they were never intended to be, or really should be for the residents of the state? They can get donations and research funding without whoring themselves out. What benefit is it being one of the seven - is some unknown foundation throwing millions at the school because they are in the gang of seven? I doubt it. So why do it? They are screwing their own AD programs by not being on a level playing field. Which ironically costs the school a lot of money.
