Dillon is on the Basilio show right now. FYI
I'm going to have to listen later. Maybe it's just because I've been listening to TSR more (I'm from GA), but do this many commits do interviews every year? The one's I've heard are:
3-4 with Vic
2 with TK
2 with Hurd
2 with Kameel
1 with Cortez
1 with Lauderdale
2 with Weatherd
1 with Gaulden

I'm sure there were more and this is Bates' second. JW

Size-Strength-Range
Tall with a well-built frame, good playing strength and pursuit speed. Has the length to still fill out and add size. His proper angles, length and leverage to the football assist his range, which is good. Can open his hips and run with effort, but we feel he has better short-range speed and skill-set than long.

Instincts/Take On Skills
Reacts quickly to run/pass keys. Holds his position vs. misdirection and rarely lets ball carriers outside Plays square filling downhill but has the lateral agility to avoid blockers through traffic. Does a good job mirroring between the tackles and taking away the cutback lane. Stays home and rarely over pursues. Scrapes well while maintaining proper angles on the ball carrier. Shows a burst off-tackle and to the sideline and is rarely beat to the edge. Does a really good job shedding and keeping blockers off his body while stringing the run outside. Primarily in walk away alignment giving late flow to inside runs but he can stack downhill when positioned inside and maintain his base and outside leverage at the point of attack.

Tackling
Not an explosive downhill tackler but wrap-up type and is reliable. Plays with overall toughness taking on blocks and tackling.

3rd Down Capabilities
Disruptive blitzer who will time it up and come with a lot of force and intensity. Adept at rushing the passer but can make plays dropping back as well. Shows good coverage awareness and can get to his drop and into throwing lanes. Sniffs out the screen and short-passing game soundly and blankets his underneath zone. Lacks the speed and real fluid movements to provide optimal matchups with backs and slots at the next level, but he will get to his spot and should be able to hold up his assignment in zone schemes.

Bottom Line
Comes from a strong bloodline (his dad is former Tennessee Vols star and NFL standout Bill Bates) and it shows in his instincts and overall football savvy. Has some limitations out in space and as a third-down coverage defender but Bates is a prospect with a high probability of success when you look at his measurables, fundamentals and intangibles. Should also add a lot of value on special teams.

-ESPN Scouting Report

Not sure how they can say he's limited as a 3rd down coverage defender. That seems to be one of his strengths. He's got the speed and length to run with almost any TE and had the instincts to play well in zone coverage. I think he's one of the best pass coverage LBs in this class.

I agree.

They also said his speed wasn't good enough to cover RBs and H-Backs... But he runs a 4.5.

Second time someone has questioned his speed even though numbers don't back them up. I believe they look at a white player and just assume he can't run.

I really believe this is the case. If they actually took the time to watch him they would see that he is the best cover linebacker in the country.

You are right on with this assertion, if they actually ranked him based on his measurables and also his heart/smarts he would be the top ranked linebacker in the nation.

His game is complete

time for the stereotypes on Dillon Bates: look for key words in these scouting reports like "High Motor guy, good work ethic,etc..."

Don't think I' ve ever seen a black player listed as high motor or good work ethic or a white player as athletic... even though we all know there are some...

Dillon Bates IS athletic....and Tiny has about as high a motor as a player can have...at times too high a motor he gets amped so much...

He can't jump either.

I'm also not sure if a white guy can be Fast Twitch.

Fast twitch has been discussed Ad Nauseam on here, but I don't remember the Honky factor being brought up.

Anybody know?
