So does Dillon start next year?

What say ye?

I think it depends mostly on 3 things:

1. Whether Curt Maggit comes back next year (and if he's healthy.)

2. How JRM progresses. Whether he gains some experience this season or not and how he fares in the spring.

3. How the EE LBs, Mouhon and Weatherd, perform and fit in during the spring.

I'm not sure where they want to play Bates, but if it's at weak side I'd say JRM is his competition. If it's at strong side, then I doubt he beats a healthy Maggit. Weatherd could be a factor if Maggitt is gone/unhealthy. If it's in the middle, then Mouhon may have an upper hand from spring experience.

Of course other players like Justin King, Kenny Bynum, Christian Harris, or Gavin Bryant could show up and snag a spot as well.

No matter what happens, though, I think he definitely plays his freshman year. But I'm not sure he begins the season as a starter. That's no knock on Bates, though. I just could see some guys who've had more time in the system likely being better options early in the season. I'd day he gains playing time as the season progresses though.

There is a good chance that AJ will be back for his senior season, so he would be at MLB, unless he goes full-blown ham this year. He still has a lot of things to work on to put himself in a position to enter the draft early with a high likelihood of getting drafted early. At least IMO.

Maggitt and Johnson are locked in. Both should be here next year.

The 3rd spot will probably be between JRM, Weatherd, and Bates. That is the kind if competition we haven't had in a while.

If AJ and Maggitt are both back, and Maggitt is healthy, next year could be the first year of UT having serious LB talent. I think this year the talent level is okay but there are questions about how healthy Maggitt will be, how Brewer will adjust to the position, and if Sapp can deliver on Saturdays. My guess, though I'm no expert, for next year would have Weatherd starting at OLB simply because he's a JUCO and I think CBJ, etc., plan on him starting day one. Because he's older and he seems incredibly fast, he will probably have a leg up on Bates, etc. 2015 will see a strong battle with Weatherd, Bates, Mouhoun, Bryant, Cherry, JRM, etc. all competing for time.

Well if everyone is back our special teams will have some talented freshmen LB's blowing some people up on coverage teams.

Arbitrary? I don't know that I would say that. Subjective? Without a doubt. I did a side by side comparison of player rankings between Rivals and 247 and it's pretty eye opening the vast disparities in rankings of individual players. The services occasionally don't even agree on what position a player projects for. I guess it's all part of the entertainment. The gem of it all is that people actually pay them money to do this for a living. I personally think it's a damn good gig and I ain't gonna lie, I'm envious.

Examples:

Helm #1 TE rivals, #13 TE 247
Gaulden #25 S rivals, #43 S 247
Raulerson #51 OT rivals, #93 OT 247
Wharton #13 ATH rivals, #81 ATH 247
Creamer #26 ATH rivals, #72 ATH 247
Henderson #17 WDE rivals, #11 WDE 247
McDowell #24 S rivals, #12 S 247

It's all subjective. I won't say that it's dishonest but it's definitely not the final word. That rests with the coaches and their evaluations. For that reason I think it's informative to look at offer lists as well as awards, competition, etc. and form your own opinions. If the services are manipulating the rankings because of financial incentives that would be dishonest and given the personal conduct standards they and the rest of the media set for athletes I would be shocked, shocked I tell you, to find out these services were cheating.

I think I will just drink some more kool-aid and stop even thinking about Rivals, 24/7, or anyone's rankings of players. Your post definately shows that players are viewed vastly different by different people. I guess the long and short of it is I will trust CBJ and this staff's judgements and not worry about the "experts".

I'm ready for football please!!!! :yahoo:

If Maggitt and Johnson are here next year, that would make the transition of the DL a little easier to bear.

Yeah coupled with the young DBs we'll be finally daring teams to run out of the endzone. Can't wait to see McDowell crash dummy some returners.

I wish we'd high kick em to the 10 just to see the ensuing murders

I hope McD and TK2 are able to line up left and right at the safety position. No matter which side is strong either could handle it. One play he's free, next maybe strong. Would also help disguise a safety blitz.

Dillon had a 4 yd touchdown run in the 4th quarter against Nease High School Friday night.
Looks like they are letting him get some reps at RB. Final score 52-17.

Haven't seen his defensive stats yet.

"Bates had a monster game on defense in Ponte Vedra's 52-17 win over rival Nease. Bates finished with 15 tackles on defense and added a touchdown run on a 5-yard carry."

@Volquest_Paul: A big night for @dillonbates tonight as he recorded two interceptions, returning one for a TD and also blocked a punt.
