'14 GA S Cortez McDowell (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Great pickup! The recruiting to date has been a pleasant surprise. I hope the staff can coach as well as they recruit.

Got to listen to the McDowell interview the second time around (replay). I know it's been stated here before but he wants Andrew and Chris Williams. Andrew would be a great get as well as Chris.

I've never been this excited about Tennessee football till this staff started doin work. Welcome Cortez and GO VOLS!

Didn't see this posted yet. Thought it was interesting...

“I had it in the back of my head that Georgia would be a good place, but I didn’t think I would be happy there at the end of the day,” McDowell said. “It’s because of the trouble the players get into, and stuff like that. I didn’t want to take that risk to be around that.”

He also says some good stuff about the Vols...
"I felt like something special is going to happen at Tennessee. I want to be part of a good situation.”

It's from the AJC Article
Cortez McDowell: Tennessee edges Auburn and UGA for No. 1 safety | College Recruiting | www.ajc.com

You have to wonder what kind of advice some recruits get when they do interviews.

“I was committed already. I was a silent commit, so the anticipation of me standing up and going public with it was eating me alive, so I went ahead and made it public.”

“It’s a good spot for myself,” McDowell said. “It’s a great vibe from everybody that’s there, so I wanted to be a part of a family-feeling school.”

“Tennessee was the leader for the whole time,” he said. “Then, it was Auburn, and then them and Auburn were close to each other. It was just a feel for me to see who was going to be better, just making sure I made the right decision and stuff.”

“I’m ready to just be a part of a good program that’s going to be turned around.”

He said that right now, the staff wants him to play safety, and he is fine with the idea of moving to OLB in the future if he needs to (or grows). He is also for sure playing baseball, too, while at UT.

Maybe it's a good thing Vonn Bell didn't come here. He might have got passed on the depth chart by these guys anyway.

The guy said he didn't want to be the "only guy" or something stupid about the state of our last class. Well he's certainly going to miss out on playing with this and the future UT classes.

UGA players don't get in trouble alot? I know every team has incidents but it never stops w UGA. Petty or serious, things are always happening.

I understand that, but let me make my point.

1. You have to understand the author of the article. He will push for quotes that will get attention. He does it all the time, regardless of the team.

2. UT has just as bad of a reputation as most SEC schools that deal with off the field issues.

3. The UT defensive coaches are the same coaches who were here at UGA when players were getting in trouble.

I have nothing against the kid. Those things stood out to me when reading the article.

To everyone that doesn't believe in 'silent commits'...

UTs reputation has been better as of the last few years than UGA. You have the Pilot story in 2009. Cam clear who was dismissed. And Rogers who was booted. It hasn't been near as bad as UGA lately. You guys start every single year with 2+ players suspended. It's a given every year. What does the coaches have to do with it? Why not blame Richt who lets the inmates run the asylum? Willie Martinez and Jancek weren't out there on campus making kids act like morons. It starts from the top and it never stopped after those two coaches left. So what do they have to do w it?

UGA's issues have extended beyond Martinez and Jancek. To be fair, I think Richt is a naturally good hearted guy who just keeps giving chances. That might be naive but the don't seem to have the same good player bad player dichotomy we had under Dooley.

Also, Spurrier said basically the same thing last year at this time. I don't really think its a big deal.

Mark Richt is not a great example of a head man in control. It all starts from the top.

CBJ hasn't had to cross any rough waters yet so the jury is still out. But Richt has been around long enough to have put a cap on the amount of off the field issues. He hasn't. And honestly I don't really think his moral fiber is as high as people want to believe. Like most people, winning is all that matters to him.
