'14 IL LB Clifton Garrett

FSU had just as many rings as us and UF in the 90s. According to you that isn't elite. We certainly looked the part whenever we matched up with a heavy hitter out of conference outside of the steroid 25 and up Nebraska squads.

No, FSU won two titles in the '90s.

La and Ms may be the 2 worst states for everything

Food is absolutely amazing in LA. Plus, there are festivals going on down here every weekend it seems. Add to that Jazz Fest, VooDoo Fest, and Mardi Gras. What over southern state has so much culture?

I agree with MS though.

FSU had 2 NCs and finished in every top 5 AP poll during the 90s.

They were on a whole another level.

Which is where CBJ is gonna be taking us soon. (Insert soon gif) :)

Back to Garrett, let's get him!

Ole Miss won't be able to top the experience he had at Neyland. It's between us and LSU.

The mustang package actually brought us one of our biggest wins in school history. The mustang package was a huge part of That win at the swamp when we were nearly a 3 td underdog. Greatest game I every attended(sadly I missed the fiesta bowl)

That wasn't the Mustang package. That was known as The Prowler and was not even close to the Mustang.

Hmmm, interesting. Is there an Xs & Os writeup somewhere of the various packages and formations the Chief has used over his career? I don't know a whole lot about defensive scheming, but I'd be interested in reading about it.

The prowler was something he used to confuse the offense on gap responsibility and blitz recognition. The Dl were just walking around before the snap weaving around each other sometimes. Not sure if they had assigned gaps or if it depended on where they were when the ball was snapped

Used both that year

Here's a nice write up about it.

But back to my question. Is John Chavis the Norm Chow of defense? Well you can certainly make a case for it. He is known for a sophisticated style of defensive packages that make opponents' offensive cooridinators scratch their heads. In 2001, Tennessee was headed to a late season Florida game (because of September 11th). All season long the defense had been playing a package from Chavis called the "Mustang". Against Florida, Tennessee pulled out a package no one had seen called the "Prowler". It confused Spurrier, the offensive coordinator, and the quarterback. They didn't know what to call. They didn't know who was blitzing and who was rushing. They didn't know what plays to check out of or to check into. All thanks to the brilliant scheming of Chavis.

I remember watching that "prowler" defense the first time. I was like "our boys are f'ing crazy, and I love it!"

Organized chaos. Damn I miss Al, LL and Raynoch.

Watching the "prowler" is one of the greatest images imprinted upon my brain about Vol football. I was in awe the first time I saw it, it's the perfect blitzing package

Good, good post. Nailed it.

The Mustang is a 3-2-6 alignment, often used in endgame situations to keep plays in front (bend but not break). However, Chief used it many times to put more speed on the field and it allowed him to get creative with blitzing.

Well what happened to it? Where'd it go? Get it back! Get. It. Back!!

I know we did - hence why I corrected you.

Must have elite level player at each of the front 7 positions to run this D scheme...SOON! :)

(Helps to have elite safeties and CBs too)

My point, those UT teams were loaded. We weren't allowing teams to just do whatever outside of Spurrier. The amount of talent on those teams was crazy. Calling UF and Tennessee not elite during that time is crazy. They would've beaten 90-95% of the teams in the country year in and year out. Miami was on probation a lot of the 90s so how were they better than UT or Florida?

Now a kid like Garrett will help us get back to that elite status.

5 star defensive end from somewhere in North Texas. They need 10 more 5 star defensive commits if they're ever going to be competitive.
