Do you have any learning disabilities?

Everyone is different.

That is where the parents/guardians step in and make sure the kid has the resources he needs to be successful. College is not for everyone. Especially if it's being paid for via scholarship. Student-Athlete is a 2 part commitment. You want a shot at the big time, put in the work. Don't look for or make excuses. If you want it, go get it.

No matter how hard I try, I will never run a 4.5 40 or jump a 30 inch vertical yet that comes easy for some. However, I maintained a high GPA in college with little effort. For some, no matter how hard they try school will always be a challenge even though it was easy for me. Like my Dad says, "anything is easy if you can do it." I think to assume people don't make good grades because of lack of effort is a very obtuse (Shawshank reference) way of thinking.JMO

It's exactly what it is. There are so many resources to help kids from unlimited test time to tutoring.

I think what you aren't getting is for some it doesn't matter how much "help" they get. College is not for everyone and I'm not saying that is the case here because I don't know the details.

Then they don't belong in college. There are other options.
College standards should not be lowered anymore so anyone can get in. If you can't get the grades, then you should not get to play.

Oh well that settles it then.

Your roommate is the standard. Individual ability should be ignored henceforth.

Don't have a pity party for him. Plenty of players with confirmed learning disabilities have qualified all over country. Anything can be accomplished with just a little effort.

I wasn't making an argument against the minimum GPA.

I was simply making a statement that the ease/difficulty of meeting that minimum GPA is not the same for everyone.

Lots of comments about how easy it is to make a 2.5 GPA in this thread. For a lot of people this is true, but as far as I know none of us have any intimate knowledge about any of these kids' intellect, work ethic or learning ability.

I was a NCAA student-athlete with a part-time job, officer in a club, had a girlfriend, double-majored, and still graduated magna cum laude at a private college. Trust me it's not that hard.

Tennessee Golfer, you have stated your personal list of accomplishments as a student-athlete at a private college.

My only question to you is, was golf the sport you participated in during college?

Yes it was. We were in season both the spring and fall semesters.

I'm glad they're raising the standard. If you can't get into college normally, you shouldn't with a lowered GPA as a football players.

Not everyone comes from the same background, has the same educational opportunities or support system. That's the point of a college education is to level the playing field. It's their responsibility to stay eligible once they're here, but don't expect all 18 year olds to have the same education level.

I expect them to hit the basic standard. You make a college education worthless if everyone can get it.

You can hit the standard, or you can't. If you can't hit the standard, you should not be in college.

And people who are more knowledgable than you about the situation, decided to give student athletes some leeway and give them a chance to better themselves. If we only admit one level of academic standards, then what do you imagine the teams will look like?

If you want everyone to hit the same standard, then send everyone to the same high school, with the same set of parents, the same classes, and the same teachers. Not so simple huh?

Real college students! Omg, people who can actually pass classes.

You should be able to read and write above a high school level to go to college. You could better yourself outside of school. No need to make excuses for people who simply won't put in the work.

It's the person's fault if they do not want to properly educate yourself. If you actually believe schools educate people, then that's the problem.
