'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

I'd probably make it the same across the board just so it all seems equal.

Especially now that CBJ and staff are recruiting like they are, I doubt we see a lot of Jucos taken much going forward. Better to build with HS kids long term. If your bringing in the right HS kids and developing them, the immediate need Juco guy should not be a big demand.

Hard to see this being the case. 4 out of the last 5 NC teams have had large JUCO contributions and it was almost 5/5. Our best player since 09 was a juco. As long as that talent is out there someone will want it. We can't let Bama/Auburn and Georgia have all of it.

I'm sure there will be cases where a Juco kid would make sense. IF the coaches are signing the right HS kids and developing them, IMO Juco kids would be much less a need. Why sign a kid for 1-2 years if you have quality talent/depth on campus and can sign a guy to 4-5 years in that same spot?

Some of you may not know it, but GPA requirements for JUCO transfers was recently increased significantly...this may be the issue for CW

Old reqmt of 2.0 upped to 2.5

This one single change should destroy JUCO recruiting but I know for a fact that JUCO grades have been bent greatly for certain schools :):).
Teams will have to make better choices regarding high school recruits. Gonna be very difficult to plug holes left by players leaving early for the NFL and players getting released for bad behavior.

Special talents are definitely worth it...see evidence below

Dale Carter
Chuck Smith
Chris Mims
Charlie Garner
Jesse Mahelona
Cordarrelle Patterson

Because sometimes 6"3 195 lb guys with 4.4 speed and X Box moves don't make good grades. I understand what you're saying, but I also agree with the other poster above. CP kinda changed my opinion about JUCOS as a whole.

You saying that ^^ could be like an elite athlete saying running a 4.6 40 is beyond a joke

True that. Guarantee there are some late 30s early 40s guys on here who skated through college by the skin of their teeth and have no business commenting on someone else's academics.

Probably true. I doubt many of them had a scholarship to play football at Tennessee waiting on them though.

A 2.5 is a joke. You put forth below average effort in an easy major, which he should probably be taking, and you can get a 2.5 GPA.

Plenty of individuals have learning disabilities that make a 2.5 difficult. JUCO schools also very rarely offer any kind of serious academic aid, such as the Thornton Center at UT. The new rule isn't very well thought out in my opinion.

Getting a 2.5 is averaging half Bs and half Cs. For the average person attending college/having graduated college that is posting on here, of course that sounds easy. But I can imagine how that would be tougher for athletes who have train at their sport to be elite/eligible for a scholarship. Give them a break.

Agreed. It's also not so easy considering most of the classes the athlete will have to take at juco are "core" classes and not walking or bowling. I think a 2.25 minimum seems more realistic.

I'm glad they're raising the standard. If you can't get into college normally, you shouldn't with a lowered GPA as a football players.

I agree.

The chance at a UT degree and the opportunity to play football at one of the most tradition rich programs in the country should not come easy. You want it, earn it.

Besides the current situation potentially with Chris, who does the new GPA rule help and hurt the worst? It would seem to hurt the programs that depend the most on jucos to fill needs every year, as compared to those that have occasional spot needs. I don't see this being a huge deal with UT. There have been some great juco Vols, but not a large number of them. If TN had a proven juco feeder system like MS, KS and Cali it might hurt worse.

I just hope Chris gets in OK and becomes a productive VFL.

Auburn and Miss State JMO

Edit: Kansas State too

I was a NCAA student-athlete with a part-time job, officer in a club, had a girlfriend, double-majored, and still graduated magna cum laude at a private college. Trust me it's not that hard.

Agreed that several of the posters on here probably had crap grades, but a 2.5 at a juco is a fair bar to set for anyone expecting to pass any classes at a university. Most should be able to get that just by showing up on time and trying. It also amazes me how people on here are surprised when juco athletes don't qualify to get in.
