'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Just for clarification, when did the Juco GPA of 2.0 get changed to 2.5? Who does this apply to? In other words, is this a SEC rule, NCAA rule or UT rule?

My guess was it happened this past fall and it's a SEC rule. But I can't remember.

The new rules went into effect for juco student-athletes enrolling in a 2-year school on or after August 1, 2012, thus affecting non-qualifier transfers enrolling in a 4-year school in spring 2014 or later.

Article from Dec. '13: Included in the NCAA's academic reform package passed last spring were standards that as of the end of the 2013 academic year, junior college transfers must now have a 2.5 grade point average in their transferable credits in order to be eligible for a four-year school. That's not only up from a 2.0, but also higher than is required for initial eligibility for freshmen (2.3 under the new NCAA rules) and significantly higher than virtually every university requires for continuing eligibility.

Also included were strengthened requirements in course load. Previously 2-4 transfers -- those who never attended a four-year school -- needed to just complete six hours of English and three hours of math among the 48 hours required to earn their associate's degree. Now student athletes must also complete three hours of natural or physical science and no more than two physical activity credit hours can be applied.

Another asinine rule to go along with the 25 max signees per year, signees who don't qualify still count against your limit.

How do such stupid people make it to a position of power?

The worst part is, I would bet that Weatherd has done what he thought he had to do and is waiting to see if some jackhole from the NCAA determines whether or not some of his classes qualify as the new natural sciences class requirement. I had a very similar situation when I applied to graduate...the requirements changed, my advisor didn't see fit to tell me, and I had to pay for another semester. None of this surprises me with the ever-present cash squeeze that college is. What's amusing is that they say it's to help the level of education to qualify, but all it does is hurt kids chances for the future to stiffen these things with no grace period. I'm all for being demanding, but one hand is not always helping the other in all this.

It's to prevent the Alabama's of the world from signing 50 and then only 'qualifying' 20, thus interfering with them going to competitive schools. I think the 25 limit really only is an issue for situations like UT where the roster was badly depleted and they are trying to turn it fast...and perhaps taking risks we wouldn't otherwise take. With reasonable amounts of attrition and stacked cupboards, 25 is probably not a big limitation.

Which is not to say that I endorse NCAA crap...just offering the counter point of how it prevents Bama from screwing others worse than they already do.

No update on Tennessee linebacker signee Chris Weatherd, per LB coach Tommy Thigpen. Weatherd is awaiting NCAA clearance.

So at least he thinks he has done enough. It's now up to the NCAA? Hopefully they have an answer by Dec. :)

I hear ya Leb. At this point I don't even care. He was suppose to be an EE and now he may barely make it in before the season starts. It will not bother me a bit to just get that extra scholly in 2015 and get a 4 year stud at LB or somewhere else. If the kid makes it in, then great, I'm happy for him. I wish him the best either way. Seems like a nice kid.

Gerald Williams 2.0?

I doubt it. I'd imagine if he does not get in before the season starts, he will never be a Vol. I can't see the staff sticking with him even if he is a possibility for 1 year next year. They would use the spot on a kid who has more time to play IMO.

*I'm not sure of just how the Juco stuff works though and the timeline for it*.

I mean they're already at UNC, they could just drop by with a decision and then go back and sort out that cluster ****!

NCAA be like, "Butch Jones was trying to find "loopholes" last class so he could sign more". "This kid was part of that". "Hmmm, maybe we will get to it by next NSD".

It looks like he is in he did 7 on 7 with the team tonight
