'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

And if you notice my little icon thingy over there, you will see I am a Tampa Bay Rays fan. It is sickening and disheartening to year after year watch our team forced to trade our best players of because of the financial inequities of MLB. Case in point...At this moment David Price (arguably the 2nd best lefthander in baseball after Kershaw) is going to be traded at any moment. If you think the crappabammers and schlonghorns and Usucks of the world are going to let a equitable fair system be put in place you live in fantasy land. Thus my original point is valid...It will be like MLB, and it will suck gigantic donkey goob.

I know how you feel as I'm an a's fan.

I don't like the thought of an college athlete drawing a salary either but they also should have more freedom or ability to invest in their long term physical health. I don't know what the right answer is, but it lies somewhere in the middle of 'no money' and 'salary.'

But don't you think higher pay attracts better coaches? It's a product driven by a free market and I have no problem with schools *ahem* boosters paying out the butt for the best coach out there. What would Nick Saban be doing if Alabama couldn't pay 8 million a year or whatever. He may be an assistant in the NFL or doing something else and he wouldn't be putting together ridiculous teams like we haven't seen in decades.

I wonder if elevating teachers' salaries would breed a better product or attract the best of the best.
No, I don't think it attracts better coaches. Do you think the power of political office attracts better candidates?

I think I heard Matthews talking about this, saying that back in his day the coaches did it for the love of the game. And I'm certainly not advocating these guys do it for free. Still, its out of hand.

Your analogy with teachers is flawed because the scale is so far out of wack.

Whoa, now that's a different animal now. I'd wager that their desire for political clout is to protect their own large bank account that was well funded prior to their pursuit of office. But man oh man, politics is a different beast. There the proverbial "turd in the punchbowl" in this debate, lol! Why'd you go there, bro!

I'd love to teach if the pay was right.

But yes, out of hand, it is. :hi:

If he gets in, he can be a HUGE ready to go asset to the team. He is SEC ready unlike many of the freshmen could be. He may need a little time to get into shape, but he should be ready to play at least part time. He should know the playbook enough to play right away.

He's in...and here in Knoxville...and WILL contribute this year. I have a good feeling about this kid. He has the body and skill to play the game and his determination to succeed is second to none. By the time he graduates or goes NFL I fully expect him to get all SEC honors....

I know it's off topic but with the tear the Rays are on I think Price is staying put. Go Rays!

I also agree with your sentiments. College football is special and superior to the pros in my opinion. I do however feel that there should be more stipend money paid to athletes in revenue generating sports. Give them more and enforce the rules. The problem now lies in the fact that the ncaa has no ability to enforce anymore. The cheating is far reaching and they are too chicken to enforce against major programs consistently. Thye hit USC and thought a message was sent. Nope, didn't even blip with the violators. If you have good attorneys and smart boosters, cheating will be prevalent and big business.

Yeah, we should really feel sorry for his baseball team. I'm hoping ours gets their hitting straightened out and helps their pitching some= more wins!

We're going to get pillaged by other teams in the majors within the next four years. I hate it.
