'14 KY DT Matt Elam

We need big defensive tackles to be successful in this league. I don't mean 350 pound laddies, but we do need 280-300 pound tackles in this league in order to stop the big OL on other teams.

Even if we don't get him, I am glad to hear that stripling is adapting to the way he needs to recruit in the sec. May miss on some good DT's this year, but it is worth it if it means getting the right types of players in the future.

Agree 100%. This is a positive development IMO, on a number of levels.

I think by studying "the SEC," Coach Strip means, studying Dan McCullers on film and in the weight room, and recognizing what an unbelievable force that guy is going to be in the fall - and recognizing he could use more guys like him in the future...

Positive development. However, I am miffed that it took Strip this long to realize that we need big DT's

Who said it did actually take him this long to realize? If you are a coach and pass on somebody only to realize after missing out on some others that you actually do need him do you call the kid up and say yeah you were down our board but because everybody else passed on us we are willing to give you a shot? Or do you tell the kid that you've changed your mind, because you need big dts. The latter sounds a whole lot better

Sounds like it goes back to the old argument of why defensive tackles are not attracted to UT. Maybe it's not so much that Stripling suddenly realized he needed bigger DT's (it's silly to think he did not know--he knew), but that the ones he wanted have looked elsewhere.

"It was kind of surprising. I was supposed to talk to coach (Butch) Jones last night but I guess it was too late when I called him so coach Strip told me to call him so we could talk about it because we've been messaging back and forth on twitter and facebook," Elam said. "He said he just needs to go ahead and offer me. I had been down there before and he said that he liked me but that I was too big for his system and that's because he had just got down there. And then today he messaged me on facebook and told me he really needed to talk to me.

"So I called him today and he said he'd been studying that they needed some big defensive linemen. In the Big Ten he said he didn't need them like they do at Tennessee and he said he wants to offer the best defensive linemen in the country and that he needed me in the SEC. It was awesome." "I think they can and they are kind of jumping in late but I think they can make a come back and can still get some interest," Elam said.

"I have a good buddy that lives down there named Charles Mosley and we went to Alabama together," Elam said, "and he lives in Tennessee and has an offer from them and I would say we're good friends right now and he's considering Tennessee and Alabama and if he wants to go there it must be something special because I like him and he has some good thoughts about everything."

"They have great facilities. I would say Tennessee and Alabama probably have the two best facilities in the nation," Elam explained. "They're doing something special down there and a lot of the commitments have been on me and I've been getting a lot of love from on twitter and everything. I just know that they have a great coaching staff down there and they're making a lot of great changes and I can be a part of that. That's a nice feeling and it was a surprise getting that offer today but I'm still going to roll with it and they can get back in the battle."

I hope it's not too late for this kid, but this only validates my concerns about DL recruiting--but as others said, better to have learned it during the first 6 months on the job that to have never learned it at all.

Doesn't mean I'm not pissed that our DL coach thought that B1G linemen would suffice in the SEC...

That's what I love about this staff. They believe in there brand but they are willing to adapt to make there scheme fit to the SEC.

If you look at the DT's we had in 1998 when we won the championship, there were 2 that weighed 281 and 2 that weighed 275. Things have changed in the last 15 years, but if we condition them properly lean and fast could be the way to go. Jason Carr is about the size of the DT's we had in 1998. I do agree that we don't need 350 pound laddies. Bring them in at 260-270 and build them up to 280-300.

At least I'm not the only one pissed....

So is he changing his system now?

Guys, that's just coach speak. The truth is they probably got bad news with the JUCO DT's and need a big body so they've decided to offer the big fella who's interested, Matt Elam.

Agreed. 280-300 is about right, but I'm never opposed to a bigger guy if he can move as well as the 260-270s we are recruiting.

Doesn't hurt that he is friends with Mosley.

Exactly. We just missed on someone, and didn't want to say it.

I know what coach strip said about realizing that he needs bigger DTs in his system in the SEC, but is it possible that the coaches got some bad news from Mosley within the past couple of days?

I agree with you. I thought McCullers was going to be slow for his size until i saw him tackle Driskell forty yards down field last year. Big man has some wheels. And since Big Dan has gotten down to 345-350 this year, he should be a lot quicker.
