'14 KY DT Matt Elam

Montrell,

Thought the same thing but didn't want to sound like a loon. The bump for Johnny Dwight was all the proof I needed.

This (Johnny Dwight) is an interesting example.
I checked the top prospects in Georgia on the four sites and found this info for high schoolers and how Johnny Dwight was ranked in Georgia:
247 ranked 17th in state
Rivals ranked 40th in state
ESPN ranked 30th in state
Scout ranked 31st in state

Apparently 247 sees the Bama commit as being much better than the other services especially Rivals. Makes you wonder how they see Vic Wharton as such a low 3* in Tennessee when others view him much higher. Not making accusations against anyone but the "Bama commit" notation must add a star to a players rating and move him up 12-15 positions in the state rankings.

Well, I think we have established that Rivals gives better ratings based on who goes to their camps and not necessarily who is the most talented. This is where we have to trust the coaches and not get too caught up with stars. Because apparently these recruiting sites aren't ranking kids on a level playing field.

You are so right. The services are geared to make money which means they cater to their biggest money base of fans. Offer lists don't mean much either since the college can't divulge who they offer.

I've never understood the Vic Wharton ranking on 247. #11 ATH on Rivals, #20 ATH on ESPN. Then he's #107 ATH on 247. So ridiculous.

Wharton went from a 4* 90 to an 3* 86 to a 3* 82 in about a 3 month span during this past winter where there were absolutely no camps or combines going on. It was really odd.

247 has no love for Tennessee. Before Hurd committed he was in the top ten recruits in the nation, then 2 weeks later he drops off the list. Something is seriously wrong with these ratings.

So he's unranked on Scout, a low 3-star on Rivals, and a sudden "5-star" on 247?!?! Um yeah that's BS. Especially now that he's a top-10 player on 247... I don't believe this for a damn second
Huh? He's a 4* on scout the last time I checked, although he was listed as an offensive lineman. And on Rivals he's a 5.7 3 star but will no doubt get a bump when they re-rank players. He's just one spot away on the position rankings from being a 4 star.

Making a 231 spot jump on 247 is hard to fathom though.. no doubt his performance at Alabama's camp played into that ranking. Add in the fact that many 247 analysts predict him to Alabama and you can see where his ranking comes from.

Elam was rated as a 90 in May. Then he goes to kitty cat camp in Kentucky where he probably did the hoola hoop or bunny hop, (or whatever else they do at camp in Kentucky) and comes out in June rated a 99. WTF!! Why such a big jump?

This guy is a good player but he's no where of a 5 star talent. Either 247 is stupid or on something cause that's just silly.

His highlight film is actually pretty good, but it's a highlight film. A 5* rating for him is still questionable, IMO.

He's a real good player but not a five star. 247 had it right when he was ranked 90, IMO. Pretty sure that tape looks awesome bc he's playing against third rate competition too

Following recruiting since the stone ages, I can say with absolute certainty that these principles are universal (all services):

1. Players tend to get bumps in rating shortly before they announce their choice.
2. Players ratings tend to drop shortly after making a commitment.
3. How high players are bumped and how low they drop is a function of 3 things:
a. Any recent camps or new film
b. The expertise and biases of those evaluating and ranking players.
c. The school they choose (this has as much to do with marketing as perception, IMO.

At the end of the day, all the services are trying to make money. They will cater to the market, of this I am certain, but they can't make it obvious. Just take it all with a grain of salt.

247's composite scores may be the most reliable measuring stick, but even then, there are many more subtle variables that never enter the equation in terms of predicting college success. Parental involvement, especially from the father, and not just where it concerns football but school, friends, extracurriculars, etc. is just one example. Gathering that type of info is what separates the coaches eval from the services.

Just got to trust the coaches to do their job, IMO.

8 offers on one site and 9 on the other.... not a 5*

His offer list is nothing special, but of those lists, Bama, ND, Louisville, and tOSU are on them. Those are very good offers.

I'll let other chime in on which ones they believe are committable. I doubt the one from Bama is committable, but that is the only one I have a feeling about.

Wouldn't 2 teams in the title game, an undefeated team, and a BCS bowl winner make it a pretty special list?
