'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

oh there is no way of knowing at this point, that comment was not directed at Dews, but at the poster who made the tired old claim that "stars don't matter"

How many times have you heard the saying "five star bust"? What matters is having the right coach and a player with the willingness to learn and grow. I was pointing out that there is something special with CBJ. sorry if you couldn't pick that up.:whistling:

Yeah I know, I am far from a "star gazer" but generally they are somewhat correct. Every year there are plenty of misses, on both ends of the spectrum. Since this kid did well enough in our camp to get an offer, I would think he would do the same at other camps which would lead to a higher rating.

That is the approach I am taking atleast.

whistle all you want, 5 stars succeed at a much higher rate than the others. that is not an opinion, that is a fact.

he could def improve his rating with more impressive camp appearances. again, i was not speaking directly to his situation, but the star argument in general

There's some hate going around, but the situation and the details are somewhat sketchy. Give VN a bit of a break. Speculating and commentating is what we do...

Speculating and commentating is fine. Some people are bashing the kid saying he isn't good enough for a scholarship when they really don't know anything about him. Looks like he showed out at camp and the coaches thought he was worth a scholarship. I suspect they are better judges of talent than anybody posting on this board.

Great post. Potential talent is off the charts here. I can't believe VolNation gets so upset that our head coach is possibly adding a future talent to a recruiting class already in the top 5 with plenty more talent on the way, Bates, Berry's etc.

Its not like we are building our class on guys that are potential reaches, we are supplementing our already great class with ONE guy who honestly sounds like he could develop into a beast. Basically a younger Weatherd is what it sounds like to me.

Agreed, no way we were gonna fill all 29-31 spots with elite studs. Coaches have to take some chances and I think they pride themselves on finding those diamonds in the rough. Getting upset seems silly at this point.

Exactly. It's not the talk about stars or even the people wondering what the deal is. It's the people that take the next step into Mel Kiper-wannabe territory and act like they know something based on Youtube that are annoying.

Sounds like he could grow another inch or two and easily pack on more muscle. With 4.6 speed he could be a great OLB or (and I know we love to move players to new positions) DE. He may not not have camped at the correct camps to boost his star rating. I am curious to see how this story plays out and as long as he bleeds orange and plays his heart out then I know CBJ and staff will get the very best out of him.

Not upset here. I like that we are giving this kid a chance. The coaches know what they are looking for, and obviously this kid has it. GO VOLS!

James Madison, Delaware, and Temple.

Old Dominion thinking about it.

That is what I find ridiculous.

Guess we will see how it plays out.

Before he even starts his senior year of highschool.. A lot can happen in a year. Sounds like he's developed a lot in the past few months if he got the coaches attention like that in camp.

Some kids bloom later than others

A lot of you self-righteous posters are an embarrassment to UT, fans & the state. If the staff offers a player & if the said player accepts the scholarship, you welcome him bottom line. How would you feel if your son was offered & fans hoped he was a grey shirt, walk-on etc. You wouldn't feel so well would you?

It's interesting though that some people feel we're holding off on letting better known guys, like Booth, commit because we're holding spots, but we let a guy who we could conceivably get much later hop on board early. Also interesting is the idea the coaches seem to want to mix a lot of young guys they can mold to there system with a lot of JUCO guys who can keep us relevant in the meantime. Feels like we've tossed out a ton of JUCO offers this year...

stars are not "meaningless", there is ample statistical analysis (that has been posted on this board many times) that shows just the opposite.

again, it is very easy to point to the exception (Fisher), and yell "see!! see!!, i told you stars don't matter!!", but that is not indicative of the norm.

And is it not CBJ's job to recognize the players that slip through the cracks? I am not advocating taking a team of 2 stars as statistics are against that. However you can find plenty of examples of successful teams that recruited at a high level but also took 1 or 2 lower rated players.

Did I miss the part where we found out all the facts here? Thought it was still unclear whether this was a walkon, grey shirt, or full scholly?

He has the potential, with his current size, to grow into a great athlete. Butch made a killing evaluating kids like this, and then dominating his conferences as they developed. Tons of potential here, and the coaches obviously liked what they saw with their own eyes, not freshman film or combine numbers

Still no articles? Last night he said he already did interviews, and early this morning, he said reporters were blowing him up

THE thing none of us are capable of evaluating is this kid's motor, intensity, heart, however you want to say it. Nick Reveiz proved having that intangible can overcome a lot of the talent gap (if one exists). IMO Butch and staff must have seen a lot of fight and character in him.

Just a question, how do we know this is true about Booth? I have seen a lot of speculation about it, but not sure what is really going on there.

Get off your high horse. It's a fan message board. Let them do as they please. If everyone was doing nothing but crapping rainbows, this would be a terribly dull forum.
