'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

1. I think any recruit ought to have the right to visit other schools, even if he says he's committed. We live in an era where coaches can change schools or get fired suddenly without warning, so it would be irresponsible for a recruit not to at least have a contingency plan. Picking the right school is one of the most important decisions of a kid's life, so they're entitled to make a fully informed choice.

2. With respect to Dews, I'm growing skeptical he stays with Tennessee in light of his recent move to safety. Given how tight our scholarship numbers will be this class, I just don't see coach Jones saving a spot for a tweener-sized project who's transitioning from pass rusher to defensive back. Anybody who saw the Auburn or Oregon games knows we need to get faster at DB, not bigger.

I really liked Dews' production and potential as a defensive end, but I just don't think he'll ever see the field for UT as a safety. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I hope he and UT come to an amicable understanding that he might be a better fit at another school.

For real??

Btw, define tweener! Already at 200 and still 8 months to go before he steps foot on campus!

While I disagree with him, it's certainly not an unreasonable opinion. If UT wanted him to play LB but Dews transitions to Safety (and wants to stick with it), then Butch may feel that the scholarship is better used somewhere else. And if Dews really wants to play Safety (disclaimer: I have no idea if this is actually the case) then he may have interest in some other schools that he wasn't interested in as a LB.

Again, I don't think either of these are the actual case here, but it's not like either of those situations are totally out of the realm of possibility.

Look at entry 2630 of this thread. His dad says he is being moved to SS with a target weight of 225.

MDO, has Jerome ever played safety?
He played some SS last year, but the situation is he received his ACT scores last week and scored a 20, alot of schools were interested before but they just didn't offer because he committed early and his scores weren't quite where they needed to be, so the schools backed off, being that his recruitment is still open i guess schools that were interested are now back into play because i suppose they have not used all of their schollys for the 2014 class, me personally likes the idea of the Prep route given his age and him needing to bulk up, without using a redshirt year, but its ultimately up to him, he is excited because Wisconsin is new in town , but i think it will wear of like the new Christmas toy, UT is still #1 for me and mom, but he has to see for himself, trust me we cant make his decision but we will guide him in the right direction

Thanks, MDO! If I were his age and in his shoes, I would respond the same way to new offers. Especially from big-time schools like Wisconsin. It would have to be exciting to think about the possibilities.

I hope he's a Vol, but more than that I hope he ends up wherever is best for him.

Makes sense that he would look into Wisconsin if they are offereing him to come in this summer. I am sure he is ready to head to college. But tell him patience is a virtue and it will pay off here for sure!

What are you talking about?

How is he a tweener? Why would we send an athlete to another school? OMG, some people think life is like Xbox or PS3.

Congrats on your approach in this process. Like most on this site I hope he ends up at UT, but ultimately he needs to go where he and his family believe is the best fit for him. UT gets a shot at about 25 new players every year whereas you guys only get one shot at the process.

P.S. Don't let him sign with Wisconsin without taking a visit there during the winter.

LOL funny you said that because he has been full warned!

JRM started at safety too. Given his weight and age, I still think he ends up a rush LB.

The thing that concerns me is Dews is going in the opposite direction. You sometimes hear about high school safeties moving up to the front seven in college (e.g., Jevon Kearse), but I've never heard of a high school DE moving to safety. If Dews ultimately does wind up as a pass-rushing LB / DE, then moving to safety now will only stunt his growth.

I'm guessing that the move is strictly weight related. One can get away with being slight in weight and out-athleting others in high school. In big time college ball, not so much. JMO

Who is making Dews transition to safety? I thought MDObserver implied that UT wants him to move to safety with a target weight of 225 lbs. I don't think the move to safety makes any sense from UT's perspective, but if Dews is going to play as an OLB / DE he should be well above 225 lbs at 6'4" tall.

You may be right, only time will tell, he has been working out with one of the best DB trainers in our area, and he gets nothing but praise, about footwork, his hips, and range, but like I said time will tell, and its ultimatley up to the coaching staff to decide, I'm not worried at all

You may be right CABVOL, but how many 6'4" safeties are there? Especially those with no previous experience covering WRs.

I described Dews as a "tweener" earlier because it looks like he has the rangy body frame of a basketball player. Its hard to find a football position for guys like him, especially on defense:

Thanks, MDO. I was under the impression that it was a UT decision. My bad.

Either way, I wish Jerome nothing but the best and look forward to seeing him don the orange! (keeping fingers crossed)

I think Dews is good. The kid is actually about a year younger than everyone else in his graduating class. That means his body is a year behind also, so the Atlanta Sports Academy was a great idea to allow him time to grow and develop. Coach Jones seems to be keen on loading up on athletes with and without set positions in mind. If Coach Jones wants to scholarship Dews on the football team, then I have to assume they're quite comfortable with his potential to contribute on the field. Oh ye of little faith....

I think it's actually a plus for him. The time at safety could make him a better OLB. Lots of guys struggle in space. This training could help him in that area.
