'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Anybody think our staff may have been surprised by their early recruiting success ? It could hurt somewhat cutting perceived lesser players for some studs late. Combine the draw of TN and it's facilities and the relentless recruiting of this staff and they may have unexpectedly found themselves in this position. If you're full and adoree decides for you on signing day, what do you do?

You sign them if you like winning

I'd rather take Dews, have him on campus in a college strength and conditioning program while redshirting than sitting at home. Plus, it's not like there is a ton of spots in the next class. We'll be having the same debate because he's not as highly rated as some other guys we'll be in on. If the coaches think he can play enough to accept his commit, then he should just be part of this class.

Does not turn 17 until November. I think the plan from Day 1 was for Dews to greyshirt, and if need be redshirt after that. Gives him a chance to finish maturing and plenty of time to put some weight on.

“I want to hit them in the mouth on the first play,” said Dews, a senior and a University of Tennessee recruit. “I love contact. That’s the best thing about football. That’s the reason you should play football — to make a big play. I mean, I’d rather make a big hit than get an interception. When I’m at defensive end, I want people to say, ‘Man, I never want to play Jerome Dews again.’ And when I’m playing on a receiver, man I just want to beat them up all day.”

Much to Dews’ pleasure, coach Ronnie Crump slots him at just about every position on the field, where he can lay a hit on just about anybody. Dews was originally recruited by the Volunteers to play outside linebacker, but has since been told he will likely play receiver in the Southeastern Conference.

Dews has been playing wr for a while, and he tried out there for his camp visit as well. Although, after a year in a college weight plan he will most likely play defense, or possbily TE. Everyone forgets how young Dews is for a senior, his body has a lot of maturing left.
