'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

Have to agree with Bruin here...with what I have seen, seems like the Dews camp was under the impression it was a full scholarship offer at first. Most people just assumed he would be greyshirted based on other factors

Either way, glad this kid is VFL

“@_Romeyyyy: I WILL NOT GREYSHIRT!!!! #VolNation”

“@_Romeyyyy: Better get that out there wayyyyy better den some GREYSHIRT”

In case we weren't getting the message...

Somebody want to convince me this kid was told it was a grey shirt from the beginning???

Kid's are not always told on the front end that they may need to greyshirt or be recruited over .... if that were done no one would commit to sign a LOI...

But if someone playing HS ball (or their parents/guardians) do not know UP FRONT as bruin is arguing they are probably to dumb and we would not want them or they could not qualify to begin with.

PLEASE LET IT GO BRUIN... and WELCOME MR. DEWS VFL

None of us know what is discussed between the coaches and players on the front end. There is nothing the least bit "shady" about asking a kid if he is willing to grey shirt. In particular almost three months out before signing day. Now if we had told Paulk sorry you got hurt and your scholarship offer is no more then I might have an issue.

I think this is good news for all parties, especially Dews. He gets a little extra time to mature physically before getting into the strength program. I'm excited to see where he ends up on the field.

It wasn't a greyshirt from the beginning. But MDO would have to comment on whether he was told that greyshirt was never a possibility. There is a difference.

Iirc he is quoted as saying he was offered a grey shirt but declined. He didn't commit until he was offered a scholarship

What if Coach Jones were to offer Paulk an opportunity to greyshirt that he may have more time to heal...and he were to agree.... would that cause you a problem as well?

Not a challenge, just wondering your point of view?

Wouldn't bother me at all Coasty. What about you?

I think it is a possibility is why I brought it up, and if the kid was willing, I can see it happening

Doesn't bother me at all, and with the way Butch recruits we may see a lot more of this type thing

a scholarship offer is not a guarantee and even if a scholarship is accepted and a kid shows up on campus it is not a 4 year guarantee - also most of earth is in a job without such guarantee and a marriage without such guarantee and the ability to keep breathing that comes without a guarantee

if you want a guarantee shop on amazon

but let's move the $#%# on from these debates

Couldn't agree more from moving on, but nonetheless, it was always a possibility he would grey-shirt, that was from the staff, there wasn't anything shady, Jerome always knew that was possible, IMO they were waiting on some others to commit which was fine, business is business, because he was not on their radar is why i think they wanted to make room for him. And him saying he is better than a grey shirt, was a kid not understanding the opportunity being afforded to him at the time, sure he has other options, options that may not mean much to some of you, but its big to him, he chose to go with the best staff/program, the best opportunity and the best situation for Jerome, whether it be 2014 or 2015, god willing, Mr Dews will be relocating to Knoxville!!!

I try to put myself in the kids shoes and I still don't think it would bother me as long as I was told with plenty of time before signing day.

I am binging proof that our staff didn't tell this kid and family this was a grey shirt from the beginning like was reported.

I know it crushes you posters that think our coaches would never do anything that is close to shady to get a kid to say yes but it's reality.

The reality is our staff isn't afraid to participate in the "shady" part of the game.

Nope, you still don't understand. This was at least mentioned as a possibility from the beginning. You don't know exactly how any conversation went. Nobody does, so stop acting like you have proof of anything. You just jump to conclusions. I'm done, you're hopeless.

Ha! There you go Bruin! Proved wrong again. Normally I don't do this but WE TOLD YOU SO!
What's so bad is that if you kept up with this at all it was very simple.

Why, Bruin? I know you are a polarizing figure in this board and maybe you enjoy it. Sometimes, you have legitimate points, and sometimes, you just overthink things.

Why bring this up? Who cares? It is our university and our coaching staff, and they are trying to fix many problems. Recruiting is not a clean process, but I trust what they are doing, considering the results in 11 months. Get over it, and move on. It will be good for everyone.

Don't think he cares at all if he is wrong. He just really enjoys stirring the shiz. I picture him hitting submit and laughing knowing it will start it up.
