Wish we didn't have to forget Bowles but it seems we have no choice.... it appears the coaches have forgotten Bowles

He's been hurt, and had to have surgery on his left shoulder. He hasn't been forgotten by the coaches.

Whether they are "up to snuff" as starting SEC WRs, I have a very hard time thinking that anybody could argue that Croom, Johnson, Jenkins, Bowles, and Vic would not be an outstanding 5-9 (in no order). Croom does not have to be (at present) an all-SEC starting WR in order to help contribute to a stable of talented WRs.

Saw very little from Croom or Johnson, nothing from Jenkins as he was RS'd, Bowles never saw the field, Vic is talented but hasn't played a snap in college.

Not saying they won't contribute, they may all be great next year. But none were last year at UT, there's no evidence at this point. I was just clarifying my definition of "stable of WRs" which was different from the OP's. I think North, Pearson and Malone are gonna be very very good, if not great, Pig solid.....the rest, we'll see.

Croom needs consistency as a receiver but he made some very nice plays and was the best blocking WR on the team.

Two of those guys fall into the same category as Bowles, Wharton, and Jenkins. They've never played a snap in the SEC.

All of these guys need to be coached up. The Vols HAVE a TON of talent at WR now if the coaching is good.

Malone and Pearson do indeed fall in the same category but they're at a different physical/athletic level IMO. Pearson was prolific at the JUCO level last year and Malone is rated a top 5 WR recruit.

Unfortunately, not remotely sold on Azzani.... saw virtually nothing from the WR Corps this year that made me believe he can effectively coach WRs. Half expected him to tender his resignation after the Vandy game and his WRs utterly feckless collective performance. Concerned.

Back off he's ours

Haven't seen you on here in a minute. Having that being said feel free to take 2 minutes next time! Lol :)

But I really hope he ends up at UT. Why would he want to go to SC when everyone knows ole Steve only has a couple years left in the tank then it's back to the cellar for USC and we take our rightful place back atop the east.

I agree CWG...I mean the guy was a redshirt freshman last year! It just takes some guys longer to adjust and develop their game for the SEC. Two guys that immediately come to mind are Robert Meacham and Denarius Moore who both developed into good receivers for us later in the careers, and both of them had much better QB play, in their biggest year, than we had last year (crazy to think that Crompton was light years better than what we had last year his senior season).

In no way have I given up on or forgotten about Bowles, in fact I still think he will be a good receiver for us before he graduates. He may never be our #1 WR putting up 1000 yard but I think he can and will be a solid player for us. And I'm not trying to call anyone out with this post at all. Just giving my 2 pennies.

#Havelock RB Derrell Scott (@SilkySm00th24) is Coastal Football POY. Congrats!

If we got this kid and Adoree Jackson, we should be ready to go. Wouldn't mind taking a run Andrew Williams as well.

Can't blame the drops on the coach. WR blocking was the best its been in years.

I blame the drops on Josh Smith since he probably had more than half the team's drops by himself.

I blame Azzani for not developing the WR group as a whole, as evidenced by, among others, the Candy game.... it was awful. Not one WR could get open, get separation and evidently still not run the proper routes and the proper depths.

Dobbs didn't play well but I gotta believe if we had guys running open that we'd have had more than 17 yds passing until the last futile drive. It was a pathetic performance against a maybe little above average defensive secondary. I do put that on Azzani.

It was an above average defensive backfield against a way below average wide receiving core, especially without North for the majority of the game. Azzani did a pretty good job with what he had. We'll have a better idea of what he can do after this year considering Pearson and Malone will both be EE's. Also, North got much better as the season progressed.

He can only work with what he has. North had a really good FR year considering how inaccurate the QB's were and if a receiver was open past 35-40 yards neither Dobbs nor Worley could get there and receivers many times were waiting for the balls to land. Croom got better, Johnson looked good when he was healthy enough to actually play, Pig looked much better than last. Don't think receivers were the issue, it was the ones airmailing the ball to them. ZA did a great job considering what he was working with. And that was 3 FR, a juco, So Pig, Young on occasion, Carter on occasion and Blanc on his rare healthy days.

That's why this upcoming year will be so telling I think.

You've referenced 8 different receivers, none of which were seniors, all of which were being thrown to throughout the year (including practice) by four different quarterbacks. And, there's no telling how many different ways each one of those young men have been taught how to run or throw to even the most common patterns.

In the most basic sense, one would think it little more than backyard football drawing plays up in the dirt and hitting someone in stride. However, I'm sure all that changes when the lights come on....

No offense at all but we'll agree to disagree.

Nope. Vandy had 3 starters out in the secondary before the game started and the last remaining one went out in the first half. The receivers were just not getting it done, other than North, the whole season except for blocking. Croom proved he was coming out of it against UK until the injury. They just did not run hardly any offense through him to know if was a North's level or not.

I do agree we will have a better idea after this season about Azzanni. He and Mahoney have their hands full. Jake can help the whole thing by being a better play caller.
