'14 OH SG Zach McCormick

So you admit then that you made the comment about him not being athletic enough without watching any tape? So I assume I was correct then in that you formed this opinion because of his skin color?

No, I've been critical of many recruits, and many guys we have signed. I try not to voice an opinion on a certain recruit until I've at least watched some film and seen what his coaches have to say. Apparently this isn't something you do, you just google image to see if they're black or white and form your opinion from there.

I didn't base his athleticism on skin color but on the fact that he is ranked around 200 that was enough for me to know he is not a great player. After watching some video it seems his ranking is justified.

And when he gets bumped to 150 that'll be justified?

Also...you based his athleticism on his ranking? That's idiotic. Washpun was a 2*, but was one of the most athletic guys I've ever seen. Just because you're ranked low doesn't mean you aren't athletic, and just because you're ranked highly doesn't mean you are athletic.

200 seems about right? Did you feel that was about right for Makinde London 6 months ago? How about Aaron Craft, did you feel unranked was good for him when he committed?

My point simply being, most people already have an opinion formed of someone off their rankings before even watching their video. Therefore, you googled him real quick saw he wasn't ranked and already have an opinion formed before watching his video. The guy could look like MJ, but you've already formed your opinion. One thing to consider is how old is the film...his recent success is what has him moving up th rankings, and earning bigger offers. So, is it possible he has improved since the video you saw was filmed?

I think this kid is a little quicker than his video might show. Also think his handles are waaaaay better than McBee's or any other previous "token white guy" tennessee has had in the past. JMO

As for Tennessee having a trend of taking a token white dude, I wont use your quote but give us freakin break. What a joke! UT doesnt do it any more than 95% of the country. And I would say 95% of those kids are in state to the school the attend. For us that would be Aaron Green, Dane Bradshaw, Skylar, etc.

I have no idea what he's talking about. What "whiteys" is he referring to?

I quess he forgot to tell the NBA before drafting Cody Zeller, Alex Len, Nate Wolters and all the Europeans that basketball is exclusive and only players of African decent can participate?

Since Calban is throwing out the "W" word, does that mean the "N" word is acceptable in this forum?

I have no idea what he is talking about either.
Ill advised statement that most won't understand unless you lived thru the transition of American sports on all levels.
Did any of you see the first black player, who played at TN?
Can you name him without looking it up?
Have any ever heard comments like 'fans won't come out if there isn't at least one white on the team.', and seen the long list of duds we recruited to fill the need.
I do apologize for offending and I'll try to let the past be the past in the future.

Race aside, anybody who would say something this retarded, shouldn't be given a second thought.

Appreciate the apology, and GO VOLS!!!

Just stop

Just stop what?

Pointing out how outrageous and racist Calban's opinion is?

Wonder what your response would be if some idiot came on here spewing some steriotypical nonsense concerning dark skinned players including using the "N" word?

Trying to get back on topic...

The lead writer for Tennessee's scout website for basketball, Randy Moore was at the Tennessee elite camp and saw alot of Zach McCormick. He said he was extremely impressive, shot the lights out from everywhere on the court, and had some nasty dunks in a few of the games. Jordan Cornish also has high praise for him and basically said the dude can flat out ball.

What sealed the deal though was foul trouble. The PG for The Travelers got in foul trouble in their peach jam game against Howard Pulley. This forced McCormick to play PG for just about the entire game, and matched him up with the #1 PG in the country Tyus Jones. Kent Williams was there already as he had been watching McCormick all week, but Martin was also in attendance. McCormick said in his opinion he outplayed jones, as he had 25 points to Jones 11, and 5 assists to jones 3. Now, the box score doesn't reflect that, but it's been said by many at these games the boxscore a aren't exactly accurate. However, what is clear is that McCormick held his own against a top 5 player in the country, and that's precisely what Martin wanted to see. They wanted to see him go against some good competition, while playing PG, and that's why they offered after that game.

Interesting. If he picks up an offer from the "Izzone", all the project and mid-major talk needs to stop. Add to that, I trust Brad Stephens opion as well. I think this kid should get a pretty big boost in the rankings next time.

Exactly why I said just stop before it turns into a race debate. He said his words were ill advised let that be the end of it.

I don't know that he'll get a Michigan state offer...but I think he'll definitely end up with mutiple high major offers. As you mentioned, Brad Stevens has proven to e a pretty good evaluator of talent as well.

Larry Robinson who later played football for the Cowboys. We would have had Spencer Haywood but he couldn't get in because of grades. Had Haywood played here we would have really given KY a run for their money every year.

Actually the first was Wilbert Cherry. 70-71 I think.
A walk on who played one season on varsity and was cut shortly there after.
Robinson may have played around the same time.
To TN's credit, they were one of the king pins in the early transition of the SEC.

They came in the same year but Robinson was the only on with a scholarship. Lester McClain was the first FB player and started as a Soph in 68. The first signee was Albert Davis from Alcoa but he couldn't get in school. Nat Worthington at KY was the first AA football player and Perry Wallace at Vandy was the first AA BB player.

Are you giving your age away like me or a history buff?

I'm hoping he will be an outstanding player because I think he will be a Vol and one of our point guards. He is not the player I was hoping for to fill that position but when or if he becomes a Vol he is our man and I hope he becomes a super player for us.

This guy is one of those "does anything to win" type, or so I've heard. I bet he'll surprise you.

He is definetly more than just a shooter. His #5 on SC top 10 is proof of that. I just hope he has the footspeed to guard his position in the SEC.
