'14 SC DT Poona Ford

sc rivals:
One tackle that I understand USC would also take at this time is Hilton Head (S.C.) lineman Poona Ford. Earlier in the summer, Ford mentioned that it was possible that he would make a decision this month. Obviously June is nearly over, and I have been told that Ford wants his father to see Louisville and possibly Purdue before he wraps up a decision. His father took the most recent trip to USC with Poona and that went very well and he has also been to Tennessee. In alphabetical order, Louisville, South Carolina, and Tennessee are the three programs of which I believe Ford will pick one. It's very hard to nail down exactly what he is thinking right now but I do believe USC is a major factor particularly after the last visit.

I just don't get why the recruiting services still say SC is going to be a huge factor. I hope his dad doesn't make it up to UL with him and he decides sooner than later!

Hard to believe this kid would choose Louisville over SEC schools like SC and TN being his other options. I realize they had a fluke season last year but come on. I've been to plenty of games at U of L and it sucks. They might have a nice little stadium for their standards but it's a little league atmosphere compared to the Tennessee's and South Carolina's.

Exactly. We have to beat out USCjr here. Thinking when its all said and done, the pressure to stay in state will be too tough to overcome.

I'm aware that Knoxville is no glamour-ish city, but I couldn't imagine leaving a place like Hilton Head for the likes of Columbia. I'd say Columbia was a dump, but I'd be insulting dumps everywhere.

Truth. However, Knoxville really is glamourish compared to Columbia! lol. Poona needs to be a Vol.

I have learn to be very cautious when listening to "insiders" or people who claim to have connections on message boards. Most of us can guess right sometimes.

Back to Poona. Do you see him committing to UT still, and is the coaching staff comfortable with his height, but he has that wing span...It wouldn't surprise to see him out of state, most likely UT.

The fact that SC is pushing hard for JUCO DT Abu Lamim should tell you where the Vols stand with Poona. I think that UT and SC split for these two (poona to UT, and Aub to USC).

Dont forget that due to the NCAA scantations that they only have limited schollies this year. I'm not sure they have room for both. The recruiting sites say they are only taking 14-15 guys this year.

Didn't realize they were in such a scholarship bind but I don't think they will stop recruiting one or the other hard until they at least get a verbal from one

I don't think USCe has scholarship limitations. USC does, but Poona isn't considering going out West. Could be wrong but I don't think I am.

You'd be wrong. The self imposed the limitations for the Whitney Hotel deal. That, combined with limited seniors in their class this year (4?) has them pretty tight on scholarships this coming year.

South Carolina loses scholarships but avoids postseason ban in NCAA investigation - CBSSports.com

The NCAA added few punishments to those penalties, which had been announced by South Carolina last December. They include the loss of six scholarships over the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons and recruiting classes, three years of probation, and recruiting restrictions that include the loss of 26 official visits for 2012-2013.

The Gamecocks can not exceed 82 total scholarships on the football roster or sign more than 22 recruits for 2013 and 2014--one of the few alterations from the self-imposed penalties, which spread the losses out over three years.

“It’s a pretty close race,” . “All three schools are recruiting me real hard.”

He said he enjoyed playing “against some good competition” at Tennessee’s camp.

“I camped and talked to some of the (Tennessee) commits — Jalen Hurd and Todd Kelly and Orlando Brown,” said Ford, who claims scholarship offers from more than 20 teams, including Tennessee, South Carolina, Louisville, Ohio State and North Carolina. “They were just saying there’s no other place they would want to be.”

Ford said he also was able to spend some time with first-year Vols coach Butch Jones and defensive line coach Steve Stripling, who worked with Ford during the camp.

“I didn’t work too hard (at the camp). I just mainly did, like, one-on-ones,” Ford said. “(The coaches) just liked what they saw.”

He said he recently has continued to stay in contact with Stripling, who has emphasized to Ford that he could have a chance to earn early playing time at Tennessee “because their starting D-linemen are all seniors.”

“They’re getting ready to leave,” Ford added, “so it’s a good opportunity for me to come in and play early.”

That’s a big deal to Ford, he said, “because I feel like I have the ability to play early.” But he said that’s not the only reason he remains high on Tennessee, which extended an offer to him in early March.

“It’s just, like, the people and the city,” he said. “They have good facilities, and I have an opportunity to play early there.”

“I think I’m going to take some more visits and make my decision,” he said. “I’m going to try to wait ‘til the end of the summer (to decide), but if I can’t make up my mind, I might wait a little longer.”

Top three of TN, SC and UL. Said no one is leading right now.
