'14 TN ATH Vic Wharton (UT Signee 2/5/14)

You tweeters show this young man some love. We are very aware how hard he has worked his tale off recruiting for UT.

Keep your head up young man! Life isn't always fair. Go out and make the #4 a jersey that many ppl will want over the next 4 years!

GBO!
All this. Twitterers - don't bash or question his commitment, simply thank him for his recruiting efforts and let him know how much we want and need him on the Hill.

That should be tweeters. Showing my age.

Crying over a number is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. The number doesn't make the player or the man. Eric berry had a different number with a new meaning in HS, College and now NFL. Childish

Agreed but that might not be the issue. It's being told one thing that wasn't true

He talks about wanting to play with best players and winning a championship. Well that takes sacrifices. We need a Malone talent to help win a championship. Malone, Pearson and north on the outside if I was a slot WR I would be ecstatic about how wide open I will be all day over middle

Trust and building trust is a major factor in recruiting. If the coaches want kids to trust them, they have to back up what they say/promise. Hope Vic is able to get past this. A promise is a promise. Just because it's no big deal to a fan, does not mean it's not a big deal to the kid who was lied to. JMO

Well somebody is going to give that child a pacifier. But he's worn a different number all through high school and baffled out in all of them. I think we are making more of a deal out of the number than Vic is

Lie is strong word considering at time coaches likely had no clue Malone was signing and that getting that number was something they would have to throw in because UGA and Clemson were as well. So they weren't lying to Vic when they told him. Things change everyday which call for change in plans

Hopefully, the number won't matter in the long run. I get the feeling that Vic will be able to get past this. It's possible that this is being blown out of proportion and we're making more out of it than Vic is. Idk.

Lie is not a strong word if they indeed promised it to Vic and then gave it to Malone to get him. IMO they should have asked Vic if it was OK to do so if he were told he would get #3. If he is upset about it, obviously they did not choose to do that. IMO the coaches were wrong. A promise has to mean something.

Hope he can get past it. Saying people are making more out of it than Vic is may not be accurate if indeed he mentions the # thing and then talks of taking trips elsewhere.

While not getting the number I was promised would be momentarily upsetting, I would like to think that I could take one for the team and wear whatever if it meant that much to a teammate. That's just me. It seems like one of the two players would be able to do that. There are so many other great numbers to choose from. I'm confident they'll work it out because orange blood is thicker than water.

But yet you want to get mad at Vic for changing his plans. If I look at another girl then I can't get mad if my girl looks at another guy.

The poster on here that knows him said that he is a Vol regardless of taking the trip to ND. He posted that a couple of pages back.

Good point. Seeing as it seems to mean a lot to Vic, maybe Josh should just give it to him.

I know. It is amazing how quickly things turn from a simple statement like "he MAY visit, but he is still going to be a Vol," to the coaches lied about his number and he is gone.

The problem, from the kid's perspective, is that if this staff lies to him about this, what else may they be lying about?

This is not a situation where Butch has a proven program - most of what is being "sold" to these kids is based on promises. If a staff in this situation loses credibility, then the promises start to look like a house of cards. Can't blame Wharton if this is true and he has a problem with it - blame falls squarely on the staff.

I haven't seen anybody say he is gone but that same poster did say he was told one thing and another was done.

Fair enough. I just think that's taking it a little too far from a logical, reasonable view. Obviously there's a much larger body of work to form an opinion of trust on. Would changing teams and forcing that coach to take the number away from some other poor fella and give it Vic prove that coach any more trustworthy, or as seeker of supreme trustworthiness would he only seek out teams on which no one wears #4 yet?
