'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

If he's not performing this year he'll be out of a job quickly. So we'll see.

I think McNeil, swafford, and lemond were all Dooleys guys.. But I get what u mean tho.

Wu is right.

Lemond committed after Butch was hired - he knew both Martinez and Thig from when he was recruited by / committed to Auburn.

Swafford was offered a grey shirt by Butch at the same time Malik Foreman (his DBHS teammate) was recruited away from Vandy. Swafford decided to walk-on last fall instead of sitting out a semester.

What I meant is that we already have good examples of Butch and his staff being skilled evaluators of talent.

You mean the screen where Swafford couldnt chase him down? Just like the UF game?

I was wrong. It wasn't Swafford, mightve been Toney but couldnt read the number. But from where Coleman was playing, it didnt even appear we were playing man, but Coleman read the play but wasn't fast enough to chase him down, partly because of no help over the top, partly because he isnt that fast, but he is quick in short spaces. None of that holds any weight with my argument though. I said he was tough and a good tackler. You cant argue that point on a play where coleman never had a chance to tackle him.

No he didnt. He did that against Oregon and Florida because thats how ur supposed to play screens. Ruin the perimeter blocking.

Maybe diff play, but the one I'm talking about Coleman ignored the ball carrier and drove the other WR back for a while before switching to the ball carrier. He made 0 effort to make a tackle until it was way too late.

Contrast that with several Sutton tackles where he fights off a blocker to attack the ball carrier.

Because it wasn't his job. He was on outside WR sohis job was to mess up blocking and who ever was at nickel (Swafford) or safety (Mcneil) was supposed to make the play.

Yes it was his job to watch the ball carrier run by him and not try to do anything about it.

It's your job to make a damn play. Just locking up on a block is not your job. You take on and defeat the block so you can go make a play. That was a piss poor effort from him there.

Thats called playing selfish instead of disciplined. He did HIS job. Thats the number one thing any coach will tell u. Worry about YOUR job because when u start trying to do someone else's, you mess up. If he fights off the block, guy picks a side and probably runs by him and that blocker he just shed goes and blocks a guy at the next level so two guys are now out of the play. What you and BB seem to not understand is a football team is supposed to be a well oiled machine. Not one guy trying to do it all. Thats how assignment football works.

Then whats the Nickels job on that play? Blame it on the guy who's actually reading the play and fighting the screen instead of the nickel who didnt read the play, took a poor angle to HIS guy and missed the tackle.

Any CB worth his salt will punish the blocker and at least TRY to make a play. Not selfish it's called playing defense. Being locked up on a blocker is no one's job. Was the WR his direct responsibility? NO but that shouldn't stop him from helping on the playing. If you can blow a play up do it. Beating a block to the outside continues to provide contain and allows you to make a play.

Except every time someone ran a screen on us the WR cut inside. Yet, u still didnt answer my question. Whats the Nickel or safetys job on that play?

I did. It still doesn't directly answer the question. If the offense is in a 2 x 2 formation and they run a bubble or quick screen, who's assignment is it to play the screen man?
Always playing to leverage the play back to the inside part of the field where help waits.

Which is exactly what coleman did. So where was the help?

To slow or out of position. But taking on the lead block should always be done with your inside shoulder. It's OK to take it on head up between the tackles but on the perimeter your always leveraging back towards the middle of the field.

I can deal with this answer. You admitted that he didnt have any help and added to how to improve his technique, but a lot of Flanker screens are ran like a slip screen, so outside leverage will just take u more out of the play.

I said the player wasn't directly his responsibility but he also didn't try to make a play period. If he can drive a blocker back he can get off that block. That's what good players do. Swafford was a walkon and looked like one against the good teams. No shade but it is what it is.
