'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Great discussion/debate in this thread. Lots of solid football talk, and differing opinions, without any cheap shots or anyone getting too pissy. This is why I love VolNation.

If the rising senior is able to rotate inside to nickelback versus Spread offenses or roll to safety against Pro-Style sets, that both means the Volunteers found a cornerback opposite Cameron Sutton that’s at least serviceable and that Coleman can finally play a position that better suits his skill set.*

Stole this out of the FF. This is exactly what I was trying to say. They just worded it a little better.

Our safeties are pretty much interchangeable. Not a huge deal which one is on the strong or weak side. I'm pretty sure Willie has said this a bunch too. Film backs it up

Randolph got moved to SS last yr. I already posted this like 3 pages ago.

What? I don't think you're right on that. I know McNeil was on the field and I KNOW he wasn't FS.

They have LM at SS

McNeil and Randolph were interchangeable? Willie may have said that, but McNeil can barely guard a TE much less a slot. Randolph is definitely our coverage guy. McNeil is suppose to be our run support in the backend.

I could see TK, Cortez, or Gaulden cross training with Randolph. McNeil lacks the skillset to do that. JMO

Mcneil is awful at tackling and pursuing.

Let me rephrase, our safety positions in our defense are meant and desired to be interchangeable. If you feel like you can't rely on one as much in run support/deep zone/etc then that will show in the play calling. In a perfect world they'd be interchangeable, and they still are sometimes/in some areas (or that's what I saw last year, I could be wrong).

He looked somewhat promising as a freshman. But I don't know if he packed on 10-15 pounds in the offseason or what. Just looked super slow and took poor angles. He played like he wasn't sure of himself last year.

Right on. I think he was just slow in learning the system, and playing while second guessing yourself makes you play slower and often out of position. Here's to hoping he's got it right this year.

I wonder in retrospect if he was fighting minor injuries. I agree he looked worse last year than the year before. I was surprised by how slow he was (although given he was a Dooley recruit I guess I shouldn't have been).

? Gaulden is what you want at FS. Gaulden is a ball hawk which is FS. Kelly Jr and McDowell are SS that bringg the pain.

All the reports on Kelly is that he has amazing ball skills and coverage skills. Not that he can't bring the pain, but even Kelly himself said he would be FS and Cortez SS. That was right when Cortez committed though, long time ago.

Maybe Gaulden FS, Cortez SS, Kelly Nickel?

Kelly is a safety. Now til the end of his nfl career. He'd make a shaq Thompson move to linebacker before he moved to nickel.

Ohio state played Bell at some nickel to get him on the field, likely because he was blocked at a more natural (safety) position. Unfortunately, our roster doesn't put us in a position for someone as talented as Kelly to be blocked. He'll win a job.

Lol, that's what people are saying about Gaulden too. I guess Cortez will be the odd man out if that's the case.

It seems like if any of them fit at nickel, its rashaan. But someone like I4 or breaker will know a better answer to that than I will. I think Randolph is too good to lose his job, so maybe cortez just has to wait a year.
